BRANDON BERNSTEIN HOPES TO RIDE WINNING MOMENTUM INTO ATLANTA

COMMERCE, Ga. -- Brandon Bernstein is coming off an emotional victory at the SummitRacing.com Nationals in Las Vegas and is looking forward to riding the momentum of the win into the Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals April 27-29.

Bernstein who lost his best friend Eric Medlen March 23 to injuries suffered in a testing accident, dedicated the Las Vegas victory to Medlen and then presented his winning trophy to Medlen’s mother Mimi.

The victory also catapulted Bernstein from eighth place to third place in NHRA Top Fuel point standings. Bernstein heads into the Atlanta Dragway event only 56 points out of the lead.

“With the new championship chase format in place, you need to stay seeded deep in the top eight,” said Bernstein. “We stumbled in Gainesville for this first time in our career and failed to qualify. The amount of effort Tim (Richards, crew chief), Kim (Richards) and the entire Budweiser/Lucas Oil team have put into this rebound is pretty evident when you can come back two races later and win.

“The Atlanta race is the sixth race of the 17 events that sets the field for the countdown to eight. There’s a long way to go before we know who those eight will be, but our team is deep in talent and we’re all in there pitching our best efforts.”

Bernstein, who had the best career launch of any other Top Fuel or Funny Car driver in NHRA history, winning the first five of 13 starts, continues to add to statistical achievements with 18 final round appearances in 82 events.

“We have yet to score a victory in Atlanta ,” said Bernstein, “but you can bet this track is on our radar screen to add to the list of tracks where we’ve scored victories. In Las Vegas we were running consistent numbers and that’s what helps you go rounds and accumulate valuable points.”

Nitro (Top Fuel and Funny Car) qualifying for the Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals begins Friday, April 27 at 4:30 p.m. with a second session at 7:30 p.m. There are two qualifying rounds Saturday, 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. , with final eliminations scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Sunday.
