Don't they always put the hydrazine in after the burnout?

Jay
Is that the "magic nitro" Jim J. was referring to? :p

Ignition at the wrong place at the wrong time.

I was there, The car moved about 3 feet and exploded. It sent parts into and over the stands. I remember Tom Hoovers wife carrying a chunk of blower rotor that landed in front of thier pits. You could hear parts tinging as they landed in the stands well after the car stoped.
I read somewhere right after it happened that Doug and team seemed to think it was the MSD box that malfunctioned and caused the misfre and explosion. He said it was idling funny and when he turned on both pumps and as soon as he hit the pedal all hell broke loose.

WHOA - flashback! Preston Davis driving the Tennessee Boll Weevil! Huge white flames and it smelled like a gin & tonic -
Too bad current fuel teams aren't allowed to experiment with exotic (and very toxic) fuel additives . . . it was fun in the 60's - :D

Somewhere on here, someone posted a link to a video that featured a blower explosion. (I think it was an alcohol digger.) After the initial carnage, you could hear the pieces "plinking" onto the bleachers around the video taker.

Too lazy to go look for it........

Not since..

I was standind about .5" off to the right in that pic.It was HOT! to say the least. Lucky I didn't get hit with parts as 3 people standing next to me did and a guy almost in the top row of the stands. I had to duck my head from the heat and got to watch parts bounce on the ground. pretty interesting!

Wow that's brutal. I was at Indy the year C-Ped blew the body off the McDonalds funny car right after the 3 amber bulbs flashed. That was loud.... but nothing like the carnage in this photo here.

But both those happend after the car is atleast running. What really gets your attention is if there's any fuel left in the cylinders when they start the engine and it hydrauliks. That's gotta suck for the crews. Not only do you get the sheet scared out of you but you don't get to run and you've got alot more work to do now.

By the way - we saw on the telecast Sunday how Ashley Force's crew AVOIDED that exact thing from happening.

Your thinking of the thread that was about PSI blowers and when they were banned from usage.

Years ago, or should I say "Back in the Day"...before they started making the drivers sit in the car to fire the engines, I got to sit in my dad's funny car and "throw the switch". My dad and the rest of the crew would do the start up procedure and then point to me at the appointed time. I had done it many times and always had fun doing it. Then, in St. Louis one year, when I was given the signal and threw the switch, the motor EXPLODED!! It blew the heads off the car and the whole crew just disappeared. I couldn't hear for a bit and there was a cloud of dust and smoke. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured. Then the funniest thing happened. A number of people came by our pits to tell us they didn't appreciate us "throwing" stuff their way. :D:D
