It was his own car, and I'd bet it was a pre-measured dose of Alcohol to change the nitro percentage a bit at the last second.

Ignition at the wrong place at the wrong time.

I was there, The car moved about 3 feet and exploded. It sent parts into and over the stands. I remember Tom Hoovers wife carrying a chunk of blower rotor that landed in front of thier pits. You could hear parts tinging as they landed in the stands well after the car stoped.

I was at indy when Weis blew parts into the stands. landed a couple of rows behind us

It looked to me that he took a fuel sample from the tank and handed it off to someone not in view of the camera, I would guess someone from NHRA.
 
I know they keep alcohol handy for any extended wait/rain delay/heat condition where evaporation might slightly change the percentage. Keeps them safe and can even soften the tune up a bit, as has been mentioned.
