big heartbreaker

thanks for the kind words, they are appreciated.
That same engine has been in there for 14 runs and we didn't hurt anything this weekend (aside from the roll pin).

Maybe I'm waaay out of touch? How many runs do you expect from a motor?

I spoke with Rance McDaniel once (maybe 15 years ago) and IIRC, he had the same TFX block most of the season. Not sure that was typical.

I mean, today does even a conservative low-buck racer expect to chew up a lot of equipment on a weekend / monthly / seasonal basis? Obviously, the "big boys" run through A LOT of equipment to average that extra 10th of a second of performance.

As most of you probably saw, we had to shut Bodes car down on the starting line Sunday. That was one of the worst things I've ever had to experience.

After the car rolled back from the burnout I saw our crew chief pointing at the oil pressure guage, when I looked and saw 5 lbs of pressure my heart about stopped beating.

I do bottom end and short blocks for Bode, so any problem related to the oiling is my deal. I felt like throwing up while towing the car back to the pit, not knowing what went wrong. Did I put oil in it? Did I leave something loose?
I was going through my routine over and over again trying to figure out what went wrong. All eyes are on me at this point.

Checked the oil and (phew) it was full. Took the bottom end apart and (phew) everything was normal. Took the oil pump apart and there she was, a .50 cent roll pin that holds the pump rotor to the shaft had sheared off.

At that point my tidal wave of emotion went from fear to dissapointment.
We had a good race car this weekend and felt like we could go rounds on Sunday. I still feel sick about it, the dissapointment won't go away.

If there is any good to what happened, I'm glad it decided to break before we sent the car. No doubt it would have come back a pile of rubble if we made the pass. As Eugene put it "maybe the man upstairs was looking out for us"
Mike i am at the New Mexico / Texas state line and i was just in the trailer and i looked up stairs and she even looks a little sad. I think she new she had a good shot last weekend. I will have her back at Bode's shop on Friday. She hasn't been home since i picked her up in January. I don't want to cry and short out my laptop but Mike i have been around this sport a long time and you are one of the best team mates a team could want and we are all lucky you picked this one. c-ya in Atlanta dude.

Makes you wonder how much damage was done to the Bottom end anyway? No telling when that Oil pump quite...
Thanks to Wally and Mike it was shut off before any thing was hurt. Joe i am glad you brought some of the other nitro maters over to our pit. It is always fun to meet the people i see on here all the time.

It seems like there would be an opportunity for an entrepreneur to make 50 cent parts that don't break so much!

I'm getting into the inconel/waspalloy roll pin business!

Thank you very much for your story. I like the Bode team for the privateer aspects and also crewcheif Walt is a former CNC Apps Engr, just like me. Come to think of it, I'm also "former", as I lost my job a year ago!

Walt is a hell of a lot more accomplished than I am, however!

Talk to her Eugene, rub her on the nose and tell her it wasn't her fault.

Every time I climb in at the big end I'll pat her on the dashboard and tell her "what a good girl she was" , or "it's ok, you'll get em next time"

Have a safe drive buddy!
Maybe I'll see you at the shop.

Jim, we found out we're not the only ones bitten by this roll pin.
Some of the other teams have a keyway machined into the shaft and rotor to make it stronger. We sent all of our pumps out to have this done.

You're right about Walt, IMO he's pretty much a freakin genius.
You should see his shop, and the complexity of what he manufactures from scratch. I was blown away...

...or better yet, have him slit his wrists and run around the block.

Well, that depends, across, or the long way...............

Hey Eugene, it was great to finally meet you. Sorry there wasn't much time to chat, will stop by the next time I go to a race. Was bummed when I heard the car lean out and shut down on the line.
