I heard this rumor at Pomona 2 from another fan, who is not connected to any teams as far as I know, and for some reason it just seemed so outlandish to me. But here we are.

Congrats to Khalid Al-Balooshi, there is no doubt he can wheel a Pro Mod and I hope he makes the transition to Top Fuel as smoothly as others under AJ's tutelage have.

This will be fun to watch. If maroon is in the winner's circle for the championship at the end of this year, I think it will finally prove the answer to the age old question "is it the driver or is it the tuner"...

I don't give a dang whether it IS the current, and future, state of things. I hate how drag racing has become a sport of "buying in." And hit me, if you must, with all the comparisons to other sports ... even other racing. That it's all about the gitas, and whomever's bringing the most to the party gets to spin the steering wheel. I still don't give a dang.

Something elemental and very important is getting lost here. And if indeed this "money" approach to drag racing was actually working, why is attendance dropping? Why are old timers like me fleeing the sport? Why aren't kids showing interest?

Because professional drag racing's no longer about a small, tight-knit group tuning a car on some kind of an actual budget and then, winning. It's all about corporate sponsorship and huge, vastly-funded teams. And they rule the sport like Rosie O'Donnel at a buffet.

People, whether they're in Des Moines or Adelaide, don't relate to corporations. And they don't relate to a guy who's so rich he can literally do ANYTHING he wants. They relate to someone like them, someone who has to bust their arse to get what they want.

And no, knee-jerkers, this has nothing to do with nationality. It's about a sport finding a way to appeal to the fans they're supposed to be entertaining. And it ain't there anymore.

Call me a nostalgist, heck, call me whatever you want. But drag racing is dying a death so painful to watch I can't stand it.

Doc

P.S. Obviously I'm talking about the Pro ranks here. Sportsman racing is not, and never has been, how or why stands get packed. This, from a thirty-year veteran of Sportsman racing.

So by this you mean neither Al Anabi driver is capable of winning a Top Fuel championship?

Oh there's a lot more to speculate about. What is the real reason LD was let go....

Maybe there was bad blood behind the whole situation that is the real truth we will never find out, but I actually do believe that Dixon may want to run on his terms. It's logical, he's been driving for 16 years for nothing but owners, I would think he has enough of a bank account with a few sponsorship deals here and there to at least run a limited schedule. I feel he may have more satisfaction running everything on his terms and his coin than possibly just being a hired gun. Maybe that's why.

I agree that it is going to be fun to watch.

Did I say that? Let me look back and see. Hmmm... Nope. I didn't.

I mean that if this master of the TF realm can put Larry Dixon in the seat and win a championship, then put a guy with little TF experience (Del) in the seat and win a championship, and then put in a guy with no TF experience (Balooshi) and win a championship, it's clearly amazing. And hard to say the driver is the key factor. If he, alternatively, takes a guy who has had a poor/middling car (Langdon) with poor/middling results and he wins the championship, it similarly points to the car as the deciding factor.

So, to answer your rapier-like question, no. If neither is "capable", they won't win, would they? They are not capable of it. Both the car and the driver have to be "capable" of winning. But there are a lot of teams out there that are "capable" of winning a championship but haven't.

<sheesh>

Damn rumors! LOL All this hand-wringing by certain people about these evil rumors of Langdon and Balooshi and they were right all along.

I agree that in this case it is the car, I believe if you put anyone in an AJR car, especially any that he tunes, has a very good chance of winning the title. Dixon even proved it, he left 39.1% of the time on sunday all of 2010, now it's not about what are why it was 39.1%, it's about 39.1% on the tree is getting left on 61.9% of the time and your car is still so overpowering the 39.1% meant absolutely nothing.

How many different drivers have won Championships for AJ?

3, and AJ has had 3 really fantastic drivers, but not every year they won a championship did they drive their best. It's the tuner because year after championship year he dominates and the driver if they leave relatively on time, is just along for the ride. I don't call 4 because it's unclear how much tuning AJ did in 2010 with Larry as opposed to how he played a huge role with Del.
