Army Sponsorship

That would be pretty dumb if they cut that out. I can totally see their presence at these races as a good way - maybe the best way - to get 18-25 year olds interested in the Army.

I agree but more people than you think think Gov. Money used in Motorsports is a waste of taxpayer ca$h!

Wait a minute, I thought that 18-25 year olds aren't coming to NHRA events anymore? And that drag racing is dying.

"They would be dumb", hey Nick it's the Government, dumb is a job requirement plus it is the house and senate which makes it super dumb people.

You gotta love the fact that the House wants to give the Pentagon money for programs that they want to cut. Future wars will be fought, but not with super ships and aircraft that cause pilots to black out. Recruit the hackers and kids that can pilot RPVs. If those type of people are at the drag races (and I'm sure they are) it is money well spent sponsoring race cars, and putting on displays of "Army Strong" or whatever the slogan is this week. Their booths are probably the most "well-attended" during the races (based on my experience at Pomona I, II, Sonoma and Las Vegas I, II). Just my observations and opinion.

I'm still waiting for them the make the insider trading allowed by members of the senate and congress an "issue"....until then, I expect all sorts of these little fires (80million) to be discovered and the five alarms to be sounded as well as the medium fires (2billion) like the current bank thing....so tired of this bait and switch government.....yes we're corrupt, but LOOK....race car drivers getting defense dollars!!! oh the horror!

Stop by your local Army recruting office and I think you will find out some very interesting things.
1. The Army is not having any problems recruiting, it is actually turning people away.
2. If you did not graduate from a high school but have a GED you are automatically disqualified.
3. If you have ever been convicted of a crime, whether it was non-violent or not you are disqualified.
4. Due to the lack of jobs available in the private sector they have college grads waiting in line to enlist. Normally a college grad would go to officer candidate school but there are so many college grads that it's a crap shoot whether you will be able to go to OCS.
5. Because of the high cost of grad school there are a large number of college grads enlisting so they can get their grad school paid for and not have to run up more student loans.
6. The military used to be a place for people who were a problem or didn't know what they wanted to do with their life to go to. The Army doesn't want or need them now.
7. We are downsizing our Army and with all the above they don't need to advertise to get people to enlist.

The sponsorship of the Schumacher t/f car is more of a tribute to all the great Army soldiers we have then a recruiting tool. I hope they don't drop that program.

It's never a good idea to let the clowns in Congress micro-manage things.

They continually break the "laws of un-forseen consequences".

My perception is similar to the above poster in that, it seems the Army Display" is one of the busiest at NHRA events. It MUST create recruiting leads.

I remember judges used to give troubled kids a choice. Jail or the military! Straightened out a bunch of bad kids that way (if they made it through boot)

You are absolutely right. The military was the place that many 'bad' kids were sent to get them straightened out, and in most cases it worked.
Today they don't want or need that type of individual, we have the smallest military than we have ever had. Today we have a much more technical military then we ever have had and the need is for more educated people and people that are not a problem and they have to be straightened out before they can be trained.
Today we are winding down our military. We will be lowering the military by at least 100,000 this year and they are doing everything they can to get soldiers that are getting close to retirement to not reup so they don't have to pay them retirement. We are not treating our military people like we should.

This amendment does not cut any costs it just says where you can't spend it which is no sponsorships of any professional sports teams/drivers. I sent an e-mail to my Representative (Ron Paul) and expressed my opinion that this made zero business sense as the sponsorship of NHRA/NASCAR yields one of the highest returns on new recruits of any program they have (the Army's words not mine). It is one thing to cut costs, it is another to not cut costs and cut programs that achieve the results of recruiting and retention you are looking for and replace it with something the could potentially yield much lower success.

If you agree that this amendment is a bad deal, contact your local Representative. You can use the link below.

The military services may not enlist persons with criminal cases pending. The Uniform Code of Military Justice applies to servicemembers based on their status, not on geography as in civilian courts. That status depends on the enlistment contract, which may be void (or voidable) if signed under the duress of a possible jail sentence as an alternative. A significant case against a soldier overseas was lost by the government on that point. Enlistment standards were immediately and permanently changed thereafter.
To understand what is going on requires more than the usual Congress-bashing. In the last, of many, deals between the Administration and Congress to plunge us further in debt and raise the debt "ceiling" mandatory cuts to defense spending were included to finesse the numbers. Huge cuts. Cuts so big that Defense Secretary Leon Panetta (D, CA) has said he will resign if they become law. They were hoping you wouldn't notice.
Perhpas they were right.
Cheers,
Ed

Those people have no idea how the world works. With an all volunteer force the services have to advertise to keep the ranks filled. Most people do one four tour and then get out. With the contacts the recruiters can make at the races the sponsorship more than pays for itself.

Its the silly exclusive rights thing the NHRA sells that keeps the other services out of NHRA. If they can't get contact names there is no reason to be there.

It is a silly rule of theirs, but what would they do if somebody like Kalitta shows up with a dragster painted in Air Force colors because of all the work he does with them. ( Let say to "honor the airmen")
Would it be a bad PR move on the NHRA to not allow him to run it ?
Or somebody has a USMC tribute car honoring the Marines coming home?
Or a Navy car for their part in the war effort?
Can they stop a person from having a tribute car painted in these colors?
