I have to ask the obvious question here. Have you updated the Ipod's firmware through i-tunes? I have Just shy of 8000 songs on my 80gig and have have had a only one or two lock ups. Two things to try,

Make sure your ipod is in "Disk Use Mode" then it will show up in "My computer" as a removable hard drive. then you can run a disc defrag on it.

And finally do a restore on it then reapply the updated firmware and reload the songs.

Hope it helps

Todd

It is set to Disc use mode, but when I clicked Restore it said all my songs would be erased! So I'm not sure about that.

Listening to mine right now! "Kick Start My Heart" by Motley Crue is playing. How appropriate to be on Nitromater and listening to that song!
I have an iPod mini, the lime green one they made a few years ago, and it's still going strong. I play it all day at work on my desk with little speakers. It has only frozen up once about a year ago, and I just went to the Apple website and found the info on how to fix it. Other than that, flawless.
I also have a Motorola SLVR phone that contains an iPod, which is great since I travel a lot and don't have to carry even more electronics and their cords on trips.

OMG! A Joelle Sighting!

The songs would be erased from the ipod but not from itunes and would be reloaded the next time you connected the ipod.

to defrag the ipod right click on the ipod in "my computer" and select "properties", then "tools" and finally select defrag. this should not erase any thing it will just reorganize the data on the hard drive so it is easier to access.

Where EXACTLY is the link for "My Computer"?

Joe,

When you click on your start button (lower left corner of your screen) “My Computer” should be near the upper right corner of the window.

Todd is my cousin… don’t worry, he wont steer you wrong.

Brian. :)

Brian..Joe doesn't have a "My Computer" icon..he's on a Mac..and I'll assume he's being a smartbutt. :D

It's a whole different deal..and one he doesn't have to go through doing the ipod thingy..pretty much automatic.

You know…. When I was typing my reply to Joe, I thought to myself “I wonder if he’s using a Mac”........ sure enough!!! :D

Oh well…. I tried :)

Dave and Brian, thanks and Yes I'm on a Mac. But I'm still having problems with my G5 from freezing up. I'd like to try that defragging though, see if that helps things.

Hey we try to help..but there's always a smartbutt in the crowd..hehe

I have them both..so I don't worry either way.

Your G5 isn't freezing is it? Or just when iPod is involved?

Lots of maintenance tools for Mac..Permissions/Update Prebinding, etc

And lots of free tools..I use a utility called Onyx available here:

Version Tracker download

This tool will help your system..period.

As far as defrag..that's overrated..unless you've installed mass quantities of programs that use their own installer.

Let me know if you need any more help, Joe..I am in the midst of Mac guru dudes..on a daily fargin basis..hehe.

DOH!
I never even thought of it being a Mac, when he said G5 i assumed he was talking about a 5th gen ipod.

as for defrag i was talking about the ipod not the PC. The ipod can get very fragmented if you add or remove songs from the ipod often.

Just food for thought i had a media server that would freeze up constantly, after pulling my hair out for a few hours i discovered that the guys daughter had a playlist with only 2 songs in it and one of them was "If i had a million $" The player could not understand the dollar sign in the title and would completly lock up the server

Sorry for any confusion

Unless there are specific error messages, regarless of mac or not, the vast majority of "freeze ups"..... A hard freeze condition, is a bad or weak memory chip.

Sorry for the confusion, my I-pod's a G-5 NOT my Mac! Todd, I'm still scared to click restore, I'm afraid of 200-300 songs being gone forever!

Joe, I have a Mac too.
Try to go into iTunes and they have a help section that is surprisingly helpful. And no, I'm not being sarcastic.
Is the music stored on your computer too, or just on your iPod? Did you use someone else's computer to put the music on there? If you didn't use your computer to load the music, it's a copyright issue and that's why it's not cooperating.

Joelle I do use I-tunes on my Mac! My problem is about once an hour it will Freeze up(The I-pod, NOT I-tunes!) First it's just the Display, then 30 secs or so later the song quits!
