Antron - Big Wreck

Fire in the cockpit!! Well, if you look at Shoe's car, you can see light between the canopy and the body when its closed, so this doesn't surprise me. I just don't see how they could design this "saftey capsule" and not have it fully enclosed!
Agreed Pete ... First real test of canopy shows it has at least 1 design flaw. FIRE !!

Comp plus says he can't return for next round. Must be because they wouldn't have time to put the backup car together?

Not sure they didn't already know this was possible as the canopy has fire bottles in it. If you look at the replay the fire was in the driver helmet area for less than a second but fire was there long enough to give him minor burns on his knee/leg areas. I am sure they will be looking to see how they can improve this concept. Hopefully we don't see anymore tests of the canopy safety features in the near future.

When it came around and hit the back of the car against the wall it scared me that it could've hurt his back. But thankfully it didn't from what I see.

I was there it looked bad from where I was standing at the fence line it took a while to hear anything on how he was doing. I was happy to hear his audio he said he was fine and glad he had the canopy cockpit ..

The fire was bad enough, but also, it appeared that Antron was not going to get out of the car until outside help arrived and removed the canopy. Scary!

A stated above very violent crash, but what got my attention was the sound-Don't know if it was the result with my Bose sound system or not but it sounded like a bomb going off when crash started. Never had heard that before on TV. I might guess with the sound and fire it dropped a valve, the supercharger and manifold exploded, took out the tires and Antron was riding along.
Thank goodness for all safety equipment, stringent car specs and the Safety Safari. Wont get into the effectiveness of the canopy but believe it could have been a way worse outcome for Antron.

The in car video doesn't show any fire in the cab. He also doesn't mention any burns?

I am so glad Antron got out of that car OK. I didn't know anything about it 'till I was watching on TV, and I was really happy to see him get out of that thing.

In the second paragraph, I don't mean to criticize the canopy, I DO feel it prevented any serious injury to Antron. It does seem to be a very effective piece of safety equipment. We just need to get the feedback of those on the scene on the ease of or problems of freeing the driver in these situations.

watching crash with wing struts, wheelie bars struts and
everything else detaching from the car, would have to say if it was me i'd
just as soon be in the capsul with the 5/8" thick polycarb window.
thank goodness he walked away.....would bet the concussion was felt
by a few folks down there?

Supposedly there are fire bottles in the capsule...One thing I saw was not being to open the canopy when its on its side...they did get it open fairly quick though... In my opinion the canopy helped in this case.

I think they need to add a release mechanism on the front of the canopy that can be pulled in the case of the car being upside down. That would get the driver out quicker. It would have to be made in the hinge assembly but should be able to be released on the inside or outside.

I was watching ESPN3 and listened on Audiocast at the same time.

It seemed like both audio commentaries were stopped until the moment Antron walked from the car. I'm sure it was the right thing - not to speculate - but, it made me very nervous.

All's well that ends well.

Was it just me, or did ESPN capture some "woo hoo's" from the crowd? Probably some circle jerk NASCAR fans.

Glad AB is alright, that was a scary one for sure.
