5 – A PRO COMP THROWBACK – Pro Comp eliminator is just a memory to many drag racers, while a younger generation largely doesn’t know about the class that helped spawn Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car.
Reed Taylor is racing his own version of Pro Comp at this weekend’s NHRA U.S. Nationals, wheeling a supercharged, alcohol-burning roadster within the confines of Top Dragster.
Taylor wasn’t around for Pro Comp’s glory days, when blown-alcohol AA/Altereds shared the eliminator with dragsters and Funny Cars. His father, however, was an altered fan, and Taylor inherited the appreciation.
“My dad was an altered fan, and I was always an altered fan growing up,” Reed said. “I just loved the looks of the car, and I love driving it. I tried running a dragster for a little while, and I just didn’t like it. I enjoy driving this.”
Taylor admits there are times when he feels as though he was born a few decades too late. His approach to racing certainly fits another era.
“Absolutely,” Taylor said. “Yeah. The racing these days is a different kind of racing. I enjoy making the car go down the track and making it faster and all that. Today there’s a lot of people that can just go buy cars ready to go. I bought this as a bare chassis and stripped it down, moved the motor around, and put it together the way I wanted it. I love that part of it.”
Driving it provides its own reward, particularly through the opening portion of the run. Taylor said getting the wing and balance sorted also made the roadster considerably more manageable.
“Probably the first, to the 330. It’s a lot of fun,” Taylor said. “I got this one pretty good. I mean, you’re driving it … When I first put it together before I got the wing and the balance right from half track on, it was loose and it’d make you pucker. But once I finally got the wing right and everything right, it’s not so bad now. Now it’s just like cruising in the back half.”
The Las Vegas racer has been to Indianapolis before, but always while helping someone else. Bringing his own race car to the U.S. Nationals checked off something much bigger.
“That’s why I’m here,” Taylor said. “I mean, this is my bucket list race. We’re from Las Vegas and this was … We had to come once to see. I mean, I’ve been here before helping on other cars and stuff, but this is the first time I’ve ever actually got to race here. So I’m going to try just to enjoy this weekend.”
I thought they were referring to Todd Datweiler at first!
