Allen Johnson has clinched?

Mathematically, he has not clinched, but he practically he has. Mine shaft conditions and a perfect weekend would be needed for Jason Line and horrible luck for Allen Johnson is the only way possible for Allen Johnson not to lock this up.

I talked with Roy and Allen in Bristol back in about 2006, and I tell you what, they were as nice as can be and in no way full of themselves. This deal is a big payoff for their hard work over the years when the first few years were especially tough for them doing it on their own.
126 points is almost unbeatable, but hypothetically speaking and assuming both drivers qualify (safe bet) ...
  1. Line must win (100 points)
  2. Line must set the National E.T. record (20 points)
  3. Line needs to earn 6 more qualifying points than AJ (Q Position and little points)
  4. AJ must lose first R1

All that would just earn a tie ... so if for some reason all of the above were to happen and Line completely dominates qualifying, he could win the championship.

Of course if AJ wins R1, nothing else matters and he's the 2012 Champ. But it is fun to speculate on scenarios.

Actually Jim, if AJ qualifies it's over. Here is the math. If he qualifies 16th and loses first round he would get 31 points. If Line has a perfect weekend he would get 150 points. 150 minus 31 equals 119. Line is 126 points back so the only way that he can win the championship is if AJ fails to qualify (earning 10 points) and he grabs 136 of the possible 150 to tie, 137 to win.

Being that close I wouldn't be able to sleep for the next two weeks. I'd rather have clinched or have it be 70 points, but right on the line UGH

Great season, looking forward to seeing the #1 on his car next season

Even a DNQ gets him 10 points so Line would have to be pretty spectacular regardless!

Congrats to AJ and the team!!

To go a step further, I would bet the entire championship purse that the record will not be set in Pomona. AJ doesn't even have to go if he doesn't want to. Jason would still have to win the race, qualify #1, and sweep most of the little points for each session to reach 130 points and win it by 4. If AJ makes a pass and loads up and goes home, the best Jason would do is -6.

Like Dave says, all AJ has to do is stage up in one Q session and it's his. I think we all agree that a new PS record ain't happinin in Pomona.

I almost hope AJ doesn't show, can you imagine the pressure on Line...:p:p

For what it's worth, the Summit cars historically do well at Pomona, so I'm sure Line will gain some points and tighten up the final tally. But I doubt it will be enough to take the championship. Being a Mopar Guy I'm thrilled for AJ and the whole Johnson team. I'll be at Pomona to watch the ceremonies!

although he'd obviously like the trophy himself, nobody will be happier
for an AJ championship than jason line.

I think it's cool that AJ gets to win it with his Dad after all the years together. Also for Roy tuning his son's car to his first Pro Stock championship, it doesn't get much better than that. Congrats to AJ, Roy and the rest of the team!

They interviewed Roy and his wife after the final, and you could tell Roy was pretty emotional. I think it was finally beginning to sink in that after all these years, and all that hard work...........

Really happy for them.

Why do you say that, Mike? Are they good friends?

It's kinda' tough to gage that sometimes when barbs are exchanged, whether it be on camera or in ND. I often wonder about those kinds of things, as far as what's real and what's hype.

There is always a lot of good natured ribbing that goes on between Allen and Jason. It has been highlighted that on the broadcast a few times.

But what if he oils the track down 6 times?!

If he was driving a Chevy that might be a concern. :p
But, he's driving an almighty Mopar. No worries.
Of all the teams that have won a championship, Roy & Allen Johnson are certainly one of the more deserving. Nobody works harder than they do.
