We have 240 Gordie. Will this year bring 340 Brittany? Or have any rules be adjusted over the off season to prevent this.

I think the new "300mph to the eighth mile" club NHRA put in play was the de facto rule to prevent it. To Paul's point, when Brittany went 299, she didn't even hit 335 and I'd reason it's because the rev limiter is kicking in even earlier than it would on say a 294/295 mph run to the eighth. By offering $30k to the first driver to do it, and cash for driver's 2-10 as well, the NHRA has moved some of the focus of the crew chiefs, drivers, and fans from the top end to the eighth mile.

My theory. To hit 340, you have to be softer earlier in the run to keep the rev limiter from kicking in for as long as possible. Of course, in doing this, it would hurt the E.T. and make hitting 300 at the eighth much harder. So, do you shoot for 340 but have potentially a slower E.T., or have a quicker E.T. and a shot at some cash for going 300 in the eighth? My guess, the NHRA wants focus on the latter and not the former.

Say a car is easily qualified on the first run Friday. Is it possible a crew chief might try to go for 340 in the Friday night, "mine is bigger than yours" session?

won't happen...the rev limiter has been doing its job for years. 300 in the 1/8th, I can see that happening this year but will take perfect conditions

They have pretty much had this opportunity for the last several years. Seems like every time Grubnic or the Capco boys 'swing for the fences' trying to put up a monster run, E.T. is their main focus. Maybe locking in the #1 qualifying position is too important? Maybe they know the rev limiter is just too much of an uphill battle to try and set the car up to get around it? Point being, they've had the horsepower for several years to go 340, yet it hasn't happened. Who knows?

Given the limitations of track length, the rev limiter and safety of the tires, the chances of seeing a new record, other than E.T., are slim to none.
All I really care to see is side by side racing, whether it be a smoke filled peddle-fest, or having both cars hooked up with 10 foot tall header flames.
The numbers showing on the scoreboard really don't mean as much anymore.

I think the focus is getting quicker not faster. It will happen when conditions are perfect and the stars align
