2010 driver/team predictions (1 Viewer)

WJ should tune and KJ should drive.
We are big WJ/KJ fans also, so don't take this wrong...

How about Greg Stanfield driving the second car in the WJ camp, with Warren staying closer to home, developing the HP... I'm sure Greg would have to bring some $$ to the table to accomplish this, but it might keep them all out there in 2010....

Just a thought.

Ya but what happened in pro stock? Did Glidden win in the Red Cross/Reher - Morrison Car?

Controversy and change are running rampant as the 2010 Pro Stock teams arrive in Pomona for the first race of the year. Rumor has it that the NHRA is looking at developing a new Pro Stock car, one that is more recognizable to the fans, safer for the drivers, equalizes the competition, and utilizes some of the current technology in today’s passenger vehicles. Rumored plans call for turbochargers, wings, body kits, and 20 inch rims. Of course should the NHRA proceed with this new car, it would make all current cars and engines in use today obsolete, as well as de-value any resale potential. When asked about those potential side effects NHRA’s Graham Light responded with, “It’s a risk we’re willing to take.” Needless to say, none of the current Pro Stock teams are embracing the idea.

In addition to the returning teams from last year’s championship chase, there are several new combinations in the Pro Stock paddock. In an eleventh hour deal, Hurst shifters have signed on to sponsor Kurt Johnson; as a result, Kurt’s Chevy will sport the silver and black scheme that his father Warren ran in the early ‘80’s. Hurst also announced the reformation of the Hurst Shifters Pro Stock Challenge, which will take place during the Carolinas Nationals. Finally, Hurst also has named Jessica Horne as their new Miss Hurst; not surprisingly, the Hurst display is one of the more popular attractions in the midway. Returning to the sport as an owner with his familiar yellow and black colors is Frank Iaconio, the car is a Pontiac GXP, and will be driven by Tom Martino. Also returning is that little ol’ team from Texas; no, not ZZ Top, but rather the Reher Morrison duo of David Reher and Bruce Allen. Piloting the famous white, red, and blue Chevrolet Cobalt is the Kid, Richie Stevens. And lastly there’s the much anticipated return of Jenkins Competition; the Grump has purchased a Cagnazzi built Chevy, painted refrigerator white and dubbed Grumpy’s Toy XVIII. Grumpy has reunited with Dave Connolly in an attempt to conquer the Pro Stock category once again. It would be remiss if it wasn’t mentioned that the Glidden family has returned to NHRA competiton, only with a pair of new Ford Mustang Cobra Jet Super Stockers.

Following the Thunder Valley Nationals, Jim Cunningham, owner and driver of one of the Fords for Cunningham Motorsports has decided to put Bill Glidden behind the wheel in order to evaluate and develop his and teammate Erica Enders Mustangs. The addition of Glidden has an immediate impact, for the first time all season both cars qualify at the same event, the Summit Racing Nationals in Norwalk. For his first race for Cunningham, Glidden faces off with Kurt Johnson in round one. Fireworks erupt between the two as both sit pre-staged for 74 seconds, KJ narrowly wins the race, 6.567 to 6.628. In the shut down area, Johnson is visibly angry with Glidden’s staging antics, calling them childish and stupid. Glidden responded with “He had me, I had to try something, we’re just racing out here.” Since then, the two have been at each other’s throats trading barbs.

After years of R&D, Warren Johnson has begun running a new version of the GM DRCE, the Professor has kept very quiet about this combo as it has yielded some very impressive dyno runs. WJ did offer up that he believes the new engine is worth 1 or 2 hundredths. In other WJ news, it’s been reported that the University of Georgia has offered the Professor a job teaching a class in the theoretical properties of aerodynamics and horsepower. When asked about the possibility of grading on a curve WJ simply stated, “Unlikely”. Needless to say this would be an advanced course, and the meek should not apply.

On Labor Day Monday, the Big Go, low qualifier Greg Anderson has paced the field since Friday, with Mike Edwards a mere 2 thousandths back. The bump is only 11 hundredths off Anderson’s mark. The pairing to decide the 56th U.S. Nationals is a classic, Bill Glidden and Kurt Johnson. Since Norwalk neither has had much good to say about the other, moreover this is Indy, and both want a victory in the worst way. The fans are anticipating another staging duel, and the drivers don’t disappoint. In what has to be one of the longest duels in history both sat pre-staged at idle for nearly 3 minutes. Starter Rick Stewart threw his hands up in disgust, cracked open a Full Throttle, sat back, and enjoyed the show. After what seemed like an eternity both drivers finally staged, all while Stewart calmly sipped his beverage. In a matter of pure luck, Rick Stewart shot up off his stool as the last amber flickered on, as if he just fired the starting pistol at the Olympics. Much like Norwalk, KJ was late off the line again, only this time Glidden had the better performing car. It was the first win for a Ford since his father won at Englishtown in 1995! It also marked the first time that a father and son won their first Pro Stock race at the U.S. Nationals. Tempers flared on the starting line as crew members confronted one another, ESPN2 had to censor the audio as both teams were screaming obcenities and questioning each others lineage. Down at the far end, both teams got into it once again with pushing and shoving taking the place of words. Finally seperated by track security, both parties returned to their respective pits and cooled off. Luckily, there were no injuries, and the only non-repairable loss was to Bob Glidden's pit bike, rumors persist that the darn thing just fell over.

With the season nearing completion, many emotional wins have been captured during the season, Warren Johnson winning Brainerd over his son Kurt, Bill Glidden victorious at Indy, and Dave Connolly giving Bill Jenkins his first win as an owner in over 25 years at Reading. Similar to the nitro categories, Pro Stock contenders entered the Finals with one round separating the top three; Mike Edwards, Greg Anderson, and Jeg Coughlin, Jr. were all eligible for the championship. Entering Sunday, Edwards had regained the lead by qualifying number one. The pairings for the top three in round one had Mike Edwards facing Erica Enders, Greg Anderson against Larry Morgan, and Jeg Coughlin, Jr. running John Nobile, whom was running a black and gold Rod Shop Mustang for Larry Morgan. All three title hopefuls made it past to round two, this time around Edwards had to face Warren Johnson, Anderson met teammate Jason Line, and Coughlin lined up with Richie Stevens. Only Edwards and Anderson made it through to the semis, where it would be Stevens having lane choice over the Summit ride. Edwards didn’t have it any easier, as he had the fast Ford of Bill Glidden. First up was the Edwards and Glidden, off the line Glidden was behind by 9 thousandths. But, in a remarkable display of power ran down Mike Edwards to take a two thousandths margin of victory. All Greg Anderson had to do was defeat Richie Stevens, and the 2010 title was his. At the green, Stevens was out on Greg, the Summit Pontiac was tracking down the Reher Morrison Chevy, but ran out of track losing by 4 thousandths, and in doing so gave Mike Edwards his second consecutive NHRA Full Throttle Pro Stock Championship. In the final round, Richie Stevens put David Reher and Bruce Allen back in victory lane when Bill Glidden went red. The quiet Oklahomian, Mike Edwards, celebrated his title with class and dignity, even after John Force planted a big kiss on his cheek.

My prediction? Highly financed fuel team lures a military GPS expert away from the Department of Defense and hires an unemployed F1 telemetry wizard. They hack into the finish line auto-shutoff system and strange things begin to happen to opponents.
Chaos ensues . . . teams owners accuse drivers of lying about not lifting and crew chiefs of falsifying data. Entire NHRA Tech Department suffers nervous breakdowns because they can't find anything at the track causing these mysterious malfunctions. Of course, it's all being controlled via satelite from a bunker buried under the team's shop!

Defy ya to prove this couldn't happen . . . it's no stranger than them supersecret meetings! - ;)

Jim... I owe YOU a beer for that one... :D

I think one of the biggest stories that you will see coming out of the 2010season is the return of Ford to PS. With talented people like Darin Morgan and Larry Morgan on board with this new engine /cylinder head deal , good things will come of this. Also factory backing for the first time in a LONG time.

I saw someone mention Rahn to DSR and im not going to say anything but ill tell you theres probably going to be some big news involving Schumacher, Tobler, and some new, very rich people who are very interested in running top fuel cars. (so ive heard anyways)
