Yates Fights Through Problems, Qualifies 12th at Firebird Raceway

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Jim Yates admitted to struggling through two days of changing weather conditions during qualifying for Sunday's Checkers Schuck's Kragen Nationals at Firebird Raceway and Saturday afternoon he was pleased to be 12th in the starting Pro Stock line-up.

"If someone had told me before qualifying that I'd be 12th, I would've been disappointed," said Yates, "but after encountering the problems we did, I'm thankful we qualified 12th. The track was hard to get ahold of and we put in a new Bill Jenkins motor Saturday. Then we had to work on getting the tune-up right. I am excited about racing on Sunday."

The veteran driver from Occoquan, Va., meets Warren Johnson (No. 5, 6.652 at 208.14 mph) in the opening round.

Friday's conditions were cloudy and cool, providing optimum opportunities for quick times. The sun warmed the track and temperatures climbed, making the track more difficult to negotiate.
