Wreck Fest

Re: Wreck Fest?

2 Pro Mods and a P/stocker so far

The fast door cars are tied, 2-2. Right now, all 3 Pro Stockers from Maryland aren't looking good......:(

Left Lane: Bob Benza No Time, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.750/204.17, Was #17
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.634/208.17, Now #1; Best prior run: 14.616/57.73, Was #22

Weather conditions: air temperature 76 degrees, relative humidity 47 percent, barometer 29.06 inches, adjusted altitude 2,679 feet, track temperature 96 degrees.
Benza with a big wheel stand and then the car got out of the groove. Then it darted across both lanes and hit the right wall with left front of the car and then spun around and slammed the driver side of the car. He then spun around and came to a stop in the middle of the track. Johnson in the other lane with a great pass and he goes to the number one spot. Kurt Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-0.988 sec., 330ft-2.777, 660ft-4.267/165.11 mph, 1,000ft-5.551.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Left Lane: Erica Enders Runs 6.663/206.39, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.730/204.91, Was #17
Right Lane: Jim Cunningham No Time, Now #22; Best prior run: 13.881/60.98, Was #22

Cunningham started drifting out of the groove and got over by the wall and tagged it. Enders was straight down the groove to get in the sho for now. Erica Enders' incremental times: 60ft-0.983 sec., 330ft-2.777, 660ft-4.276/164.29 mph, 1,000ft-5.572.

It is NOT the track's fault when racers overdrive their vehicles. I saw the wrecks and all of them could have been prevented had the drivers lifted before they started to loose control.

Unless you REALLY know the facts you should keep to yourself.
Everyone will be much better off!

Thanks, Bob Benza

A website dedicated to peoples opinions on scenarios will never render 100% accurate truth; so Bob tell us in your own words what happened.

Yes, I would like to know also. From my vantage point at around the 1/8th mile I saw the car pushed towards the wall and then it swayed back and forth ( still under power ). At the 330 ft mark it did one more sway and then around it went right in front of me.

I was impressed he didn't roll it. Luckily Kurt was out in front or that would have been really bad.

Bob i dont believe don was trying to rag on you i think he was just saying from his vantage point and what not that in his opinion the cars were over drove! But i am sure as long as everyone else would like to know since you were one of the drivers what happend to the car to make you lose control and crash!

Why is it when a car goes out of control, the keyboard crew chiefs automatically believe its the driver "over driving" the car. I saw Bob's crash and it was definately unfortunate. Here's a guy who goes out when he wants to and seems to just have fun....then the car drifts a little out of the groove and its over. My thought on his situation....my opinion....too much traction compound in the "groove" that far down track. One tire slightly out of the groove gets driven hard to the left....I dunno. Just glad Bob is ok and hopefully the car is repairable.

Head's situation is completely different. Anyone who has driven a fuel car will tell you that when the car smokes the tires that hard, that early they can take they're foot off it, but the car takes 4-5 seconds to catch up. This has to do with all of the fuel volume being forced through the motor at that time and the car doesn't have a chance to bleed it off like it does at speed. Jim's car seemed to start to rotate immediately, he lifted and the car didn't react to his input.....could have been worse.

I guess my whole rant here, is instead of bashing, beating or trying to sound smart, BE SMART and get your facts....ask questions!!! There are plenty of pro's (drivers and crew members) on here that will freely answer questions, even if they are difficult.

Just my 2 cents.

Why would anyone on here think that a driver needs to explain what happpened on the track to you? Are you saying he needs to tell you why he crashed? Or what his thinking was? Things happen. I crashed 6 years ago and after three days in the hospital, I go online to see people that don't even know me talking about how I kept my foot in it way too long. They weren't in the car and had no idea that I had killed the motor and pulled the fuel shut off. They said I over drove the car......well, I'd guess that none of them ever put their ass in a car nor ever had a rear end break on them at half track at over 120+ MPHs.....

Unless that crashed involved you...just move on...

They don't, of course. But people ask because it's of interest when it involves a high-profile driver, or class, like Pro Stock or Pro Mod. You've got to watch the way you word things, however, or you come on as a criticizer. Even Fishel's post, which wasn't intended to be disrespectful in any way, says "MAKE YOU LOSE CONTROL AND CRASH". Can you see how that might make Benza feel as if he's being pegged as an inadequate driver?

I learned a lesson on words at Dallas, right after Schumacher's car, tuned out the wazoo to possibly run a high 4.30 under perfect Friday night conditions, went about 3 feet and shut off. I asked him a few minutes later, right after he returned to the pits, "what went wrong with the car". He snapped, "It BROKE", and walked off.

Dumb question, bad timing. Same thing here. Bob Benza just lost an expensive race car and could have lost his life or been seriously injured. It's probably best not to ask him, right now, how it got out of shape... even if you mean well.

Dude i have no idea who you are and really dont care but please dont get on here and give me attitude and try and make me look like a ass! Never did i say he needed to tell me why he crashed i asked if he would! I am a fellow driver who was curious as to what happend if maybe something broke or whatever! I know sometimes crap happens and it cant really be explained but never would i tell a driver they HAVE to tell me what happend I was just curious! Sorry about your crash that is a crappy feeling especially when people tell you what you did wrong when they were not the one stapped into the seat and yes you are right most of the people who get on here have never been behind the wheel so i get your point but please dont treat me like someone who doesnt know what they are talking about!

My comment is aimed at the general populous of this site and ones like it. I don't know you and don't give 2 ****s either so I guess that makes us both content.

I'm going to throw my two cents in here, and am ready for the consequences... I don't think that there is a person on this website that is not absolutely passionate about drag racing. Come on, look at the threads: What does a top fuel crank look like, do they fire the cars on gas, nitro, or methanol, why did this happen, etc. WE WANT TO KNOW! We want to know how our sport works. So when someone posts something to the effect of why did so many cars crash at Norwalk, it's because we care about our sport! I really don't think anyone was trying to point their fingers at any one cause. I think it's a legit question... did you over drive the car, was the track prepped right, does the NHRA only care about the fuel cars. I am thankful to the racers, crew chiefs, former racers, former crew members that have the knowledge and time to come on here and post answers that are informative. I, for one have had a few not so good experiences asking questions of the crew members in the pits (yes I know they are in the heat of the battle), but how simple is to answer the question of "Gee, how many cans of brake cleaner do you go through in a weekend?" I won't share some of the answers I have received. Like I said, my two cents.
