What would Wally think

I had the pleasure of speaking with Mr. Parks on numerous occasions over the years. As NHRA closes in on celebrating 75 years of organized drag racing I wonder what he would think about what the people in the ivory tower have done to his beloved organization

I would think that overall, he would be “ok” with it, not thrilled, but that there were some missed opportunities around the turn of the century that NHRA failed to capitalize on.

I’m not sure that he would approve of 1) Pro Stock turning into Chevy Stock 2) any approved manufacturer's engine in any approved make/body in pro stock 3) no body year requirement in pro stock - only to have cars no longer being made ruling the class. 4) somewhat stagnating the development of the kings of the sport by outlawing 4.900 (Boss 429) and 4.84 (Chevrolet) in fuel classes and only allowing Chrysler 426 replicas thereby providing guaranteed sales for a select handful of people/companies. Just my .02.

Seeing that Wally passed in 2007 and Scott Kallitta passed in 2008, I would say he wouldn't like the 1000ft change. He would probably rather have the cars slowed down because of costs and because the tire manufacturers warned that they were only good for 340mph. Ten years after Wally's passing, Robert Hight went 339. They were ahead of the speeds for a while but now what?

If I remember correctly,Scott’s car blew up at 1,000 feet, only god knows what might have been if there wasn’t a 10,000 pound boom lift in the middle of the track after the sand trap, Rest in peace Scott 🙏🙏
