Burton Smith wants Nascar to have mandatory cautions every so often to make the races more exciting.

He already got 4 wide out of us, (I wonder if he was behind the cdown) how will he twist this for drag racing. Drivers must stop at the 800, do a chinese fire drill around the car and take off again :)

That idea is dumber than a red brick, and will go nowhere. Rarely does a NASCAR race complete without one or more cautions, anyway.
 
Bruton Smith is WRONG on this one.

The countdown (in NASCAR and NHRA) is already a "redistribution of wealth" (which works well for its' purpose of keeping fan interest and I like it) but bogus or planned caution flags are a contrivance that take away from the race DURING the race and, frankly, might drive fans away.

Just run a race in this order. Green, White, then Checker.
Wont take all day. You can get the race in under an hour. Less fuel tires used. I'm just joking ;) but it's just as dumb as Mr. Smiths idea.

'Bout the same as 1/8th mile drag racing :)
 
They have them already, they currently call them debris on the track that cannot be found half the time.
 
Shorten the races. F1 has the perfect length for their races. They rarely take longer then 2 hours and are just as exciting
 
Unless it's changed, I think F1 races do have a 2 hour time limit. An F1 race is a predetermined number of laps OR 2 hours, whichever comes first.

It is 2 hours or 300 kilometers, whichever comes first. That is how they set the number of laps at a given track, they divide 300 by the length of the track, and then subtract 1 lap. That is why there are 80 laps at Monaco and only 48 at Spa. The goal for Uncle Bernie is to average 150km/hr so the race finishes on time, since the rule was implemented VERY rarely does a race come close to 2 hours. In fact races at Silverstone and Monza rarely last an hour and twenty minutes these days as they are averaging well over 200km/hr at those tracks. There was some hope those races would be lengthened, but when refuelling got banned that was that. The "shortest" race ever was the last race on the Nordschleife at the 'Ring (1976?), it only took 14 laps to make 300km.

EDIT: the shortest race ever was the 1970 race at the Nordschleife, it was complete after 12 laps due to inclement weather. Jackie Stewart had a 4 minute lead after the first lap and went on to win with great ease, or as easily as one could win in a torrential downpour on the most dangerous circuit in the world. I doubt JYS would say it was "easy".

Frank Williams was once asked on camera what he thought of American NASCAR racing....he grinned that cheshire grin of his and said "it's not racing, it's entertainment"

Brutons next trick will be greasing down one lane of the 4 wide. Because his studies show that fans dont like multiple racing lines. ;)
