Does anyone have any experience renting from Thrifty?
We need to rent a car when we are in Oakland this June & Thrifty has the best rates with my AMEX discount.

No, sorry. I've dealt with National through work and now we just switched preferred companies to Enterprise.

I'm going through Avis for Indy...best rates

Last time I rented from Thrifty, the car was clean, ran okay, and the wheels didn't fall off. I believe they merged with Alamo a few years back. They are an on-airport renter in most locations, so I wouldn't hesitate to rent from them again if I couldn't find anything reasonable/cheaper at Hertz, Avis or National.

I rent with Thrifty all the time and aside from the branch at O'Hare(they wanted to charge me $7 a gallon to refill the car) have never had a problem with them. I'd recommend becoming a Blue Chip member (I believe you can sign up on their website) once you're a Blue Chip member they give you free upgrades depending on availability. The biggest advantage of being a Blue Chip member is that you can cut the regular line, last year in Vegas I cut around 15 people so it's definitely worth it. Their rates are almost always the cheapest and the cars are ususally good. Most of the time they give me Chrysler products although on occasion I've received Toyota's and Honda's. The guy at the STL Thrifty told me that John Force rents from them.

I've rented from them, also signed up for the Blue Chip membership.
They( Jacksonville airport location) stayed late when our plane arrived @12:30 am.
When our departing flight boned us 2 hrs from take off -and I already turned in the other rental-Thrifty gave me another car same size ,for the same weekend rate I had.Even though they were real short on cars at the time.
Just dont ask about my Jet Blue trials and tribulations!!:mad::eek:

I rented from them on a business trip to Denver aboout 6 summers ago. They didn't have a mid-sized car that I had reserved and didn't hesitiate to give me a bigger car at the same price. It was a very good experience.....I would recommend them time and time again. :)

Thrifty is one of the rental car companies that will put an additional hold or charge on your credit card at the time of rental, and that hold or charge doesn't immediately revert back to your account after you return the car. That's why I only rent from Alamo or National (the companies that merged a few years ago). They don't float/tie up an extra $200-$500 of your credit for up to two weeks like some of the other companies do.

I've used Thrifty for a good 5 years now whenever I've gone to a race somewhere. Joined the Blue Chip program a couple years ago and wouldn't rent from anybody else. They've always treated me right and I've never had a problem. Their prices are very competitive too.

I rented from Thrifty once, and the gal at the Counter thought I was SOO Hot she gave me a Luxury car at the Compact price. ;)

And with gas at $4.25 a gallon, this was a favor?

Once, during one of the oil boycotts (back when the Arab states were punishing us by cutting off our oil supply instead of getting $100 a barrel for it) I flew into Ontario, Calif. on a TDY to George AFB (Victorville). I had an Economy car reserved, they "upgraded" me to a Sedan DeVille because nobody else would take it and it was the last car they had. Oh, yeah, rental cars came with half a tank of fuel, gas stations were pumping on an even-odd schedule based on your license plate and limiting the amount, and I had to make frequent 160-mile round trips between George AFB and China Lake (Inyokern). There were days when I thought I'd end up stranded in the Mojave Desert, out of gas because it was the wrong day of the week.

Have ever gotten a free rental upgrade with being a Blue Chip member?
