THE BOSS BACK IN FORCE AT NATIONALS

(9/17/2006) Queensland’s Willowbank Raceway hosted the prestigious Australian Drag Racing Nationals over the weekend (September 15-17) with a number of top local racers turning up the heat for the fans.

Brett ‘The Boss’ Stevens was back in front of his home crowd and didn’t disappoint when he Top Qualified for the Finals in two of the three professional brackets he competed in. He put his Jack Daniel’s Racing Nitro Harley down the track on Saturday night in a new Australian Harley record time of 6.49 seconds to head the Top Bike field, and also lead the time sheets in Top Alcohol in his Kitten Car Care Products Funny Car.

On top of this he also qualified his Jack Daniel’s Racing Top Doorslammer in the number 6 position in one of the toughest fields of the event.

Stevens was the man to beat all weekend in Top Bike and Top Alcohol, however he was a shock elimination for both categories in the semi-finals. Despite not taking a Nationals title himself, Stevens was happy with team’s performances and hopes to build on the success as the season continues.

“I have been chasing a 6.4 second pass on my Top Bike for a while now and it was great to be able to do it at Willowbank Raceway,” Stevens said.

“It was a bit disappointing that I wasn’t able to go all way and take it out but that’s racing.”

“On the cars the crews worked incredibly hard having to turn around three Doorslammers and the Funny Car and they did an excellent job. We are really on top of the Funny Car setup now.”

“The Top Doorslammers are making so much power though we are having a bit of a tyre shake issue that we need to solve but I am confident we can have this sorted by the next round of the Championship in Perth.”

“I would also like to congratulate Dion Prowse for his second win from as many events on the teams S&S Racing Pro Stock Buell in the Pro Stock Motorcycle bracket.”

Prowse, aboard the Brett Stevens prepared S&S Racing Pro Stock Buell, continued his stunning rookie year in the professional Drag Racing ranks for the team when he took the Nationals Pro Stock Motorcycle title giving him a 100% success rate for the season.

He was consistently at the top end of the field before eventually qualifying in the number 2 position. Working his way through to the Final he faced number 1 qualifier Daniel Peatie, however the expected showdown was decided when Peatie left early with a red light handing the win to Prowse.

“I didn’t even know I had won until the camera crew came over and told me in the braking area,” Prowse said.

“I saw Peatie get away from me at the start line but I didn’t know he red lit.”

“This has been an unbelievable start to my Drag Racing career and hopefully I can keep it up for the S&S and Brett Stevens Racing teams.”

Troy McLean aboard the second Jack Daniel’s Racing Nitro Harley also showed why he is one of the leading Top Bike competitors by qualifying in the number 4 position, but went out in the quarter-finals after he took out one of the timing blocks disqualifying him from the run.

Kath Stevens in the second Jack Daniel’s Racing Top Doorslammer and Steve Packman in the Glenfords Racing Top Doorslammer struggled with severe tyre shake all weekend, showing some great driving skills to wrestle their 3000 horsepower cars down the track.

Although neither of them made the tight 8 car Finals field, both gained some valuable seat time in the new Falcon Doorslammers with Packman setting a Personal Best time despite the difficulty of not being able to get full power to the track.

The next round of the Australian Drag Racing Championship will be when the Top Doorslammers and Top Bikes take to the track at the Kwinana Motorplex in Western Australia on December 1-2.
