Sorry if this derails the thread, but, how did the folks in the other car fare? Did they eventually recover physically?

Doug is just an awesome dude! he started selling "Dougzilla" shirts soon after that deal, took the proceeds from the sale, and donated them to help offset medical expenses for his friend Billy Williams after he crashed his TAFC.
Donate to BRAKES if you can it is an awesome organization!

THe people in the other car were hospitalized and treated for minor injuries. I believe both were released the same day. I would imagine that the psychological damage was far worse.

Dougzilla..
IMO.
I think it was Dougs most embarrassing and egotistical moment to ever be televised.. I guess some of you guys think it was cool, and I guess Doug thought he was also pretty cool. I look at it as an out of control ego. Clay Milliican was the better man.

Fully agreed. Same with the JF/TPed deal. Guy who lost his head looks like an idiot most of the time.

I think it was a great video and they should show it on a race show some time. Additionally, the questionable things he has done in racing like the Millican deal and firing Kevin don't compare to the great things he has done with Brakes and Billy Williams. I have bought Doug Herbert Performance Parts before and would do it again.

The gutless never stand up and face issues head on. Probably never will. They will, however jump in a thread and post disparaging remarks about a great guy who has done so much for so many in an effort to discredit them. What a shame.

Well, gee thanks Mr. Rambo. Because I disparage someone behaving like an idiot, that makes me "gutless"? BS.

Doug has done some great things in this sport. He suffered a terrible tragedy, and dealt with it with stunning grace. He has followed it up with wonderful devotion to a great cause. But he's also just as human as the rest of us, and has shown a lousy temper. He went through crew chiefs at a torrid pace, all indications being that he is very tough to work with. And the Dougzilla episode is one he probably should have moved on from, not celebrated.

But I guess that opinion makes me a wuss, and gutless.

Hmmm.
So let me get this right, Doug gets shoved in the back by Peter L, and Doug is the out of control Egotist ??
If someone had shoved me in the back, in the heat of the moment "I" think "I" would have reacted no different. In fact I probably would have done more than shoved him.
The only thing Doug did wrong is NOT staging his car IMO

That is how I look at it too. They BOTH decided they were not going to stage first. BOTH are equally at fault for that. I did admire the way Clay just let Doug vent, that was very classy and the right thing to do at the moment.

The shoving was very wrong and Doug reacted as many would.

I think the tragedies in Doug's life have calmed him and I certainly appreciate his charitable efforts.

Cute. You have to use physical violence to have guts? What about Christ's "turning the other cheek"? That's gutless too? Pfffttt...

Since the smiley face didn't do it's job of calling my remarks a joke, I'll openly apologize. I'm sorry. You didn't warrant that response at all.

Christopher, we'll disagree on lots of things. I.E. You think T-Ped is a hero for calling John Force a cheat but I think he's a cry baby as is Cruz. Of course you think Doug Herbert is a bad guy for addressing the Werner car issue as he did and I watched him get shoved in the back first so I'll excuse his momentary response and choose to remember things like years and years of taking care of Billy Williams, his family, his hospitalization, his transportation and care at no small expense. If you're not aware of it, ask someone who knows and bring a box of tissue because it's one of the most heartwarming stories I've ever heard.
Not knowing any of the crew chiefs he's had, I'll always forego criticism and judgment until I know things first hand but I'll openly excuse his imperfections while I instead focus on a BRAKES program that could have already saved many many lives, will surely save many other lives in the future and may be a more important program now than ever with kids two handed texting, always on their cell phones, etc. being such a vital issue among these youth as they start driving. I just believe he's done so much more good than he's done bad that the little things aren't worth repeating at all in my book.

You're too good of a guy in my book to leave this unresolved. We'll just have to agree to disagree. Another joke missed the mark.
Again, I'm sorry if I've caused any offense.

P.S. I haven't missed church in 50 years now and I understand that turning the other cheek is something most never learn so expecting it of everyone, is a bit unrealistic. It's not gutless, just a hard lesson for most to learn.

I'll be the first to say that DH has done plenty of things I disagree with and he's as human as any of us. However, he was not the one who reacted with violence. He was giving Clay a piece of his mind from a pretty safe distance and it was DH that was blind sided by Peter L. Keep in mind that even NHRA agreed that DH didn't touch anyone and let him off with a warning.

Whoa, I don't think TPed is anything like a hero. I think he and Cruz were just mugging for the camera that day, and don't deserve anything remotely approaching hero status. Never said anything like that. I did say John took a dive, but of course he did.

What I do think is that John clearly overreacted at the top end, shouldn't have risen to the bait and certainly shouldn't have done all the blustery swinging away at TPed and/or the NHRA folks that he did. I believe he now agrees.

As for the Dougzilla event, I should clarify that it's not Doug's immediate reaction that bothers me so much, it's the glorification of that reaction. All the Dougzilla poop. IMO, he should've been ashamed of that response, and should have just let it fade away. Instead he built this Dougzilla persona that didn't fit, and probably (although I'm guessing) didn't sit well with Snap-On.

Finally, as to guts. The person I know with the most guts is my wife of over 26 years who is in her second bout with cancer and is facing it with more class, grace, and guts than anyone has a right to. She's lashing out at no one, taking the terrible chemo with strength, and keeping a smile on her face. And she's never raised a hand against me, our kids, or anyone in the nearly 30 years I've known her. She has shown me that physical violence fixes nothing. It was, as you note, not an easy lesson for me to learn. But it's rung through loud and clear.

You're right we don't agree on many things. But clearly what makes "guts" doesn't have to be one of them.

You are, of course, correct. I stand corrected.
