How will Forces in house Ford engines be different than what Pat Austin was working on ?

It will have the Hemi (MOPAR, Not Boss) bore spacing and geometry...probably even the head bolt pattern. Not a derivative of any past Ford production V-8...a new design strictly for nitro/alky racing. Per the rules it will share many of the engineering traits of the current Hemi motors.

The Austin's motor is an evolved version of the Boss 429 "semi-hemi" motor.

So basically it's as much a Ford as the current engines are Mopars.

Not quite. I could be wrong, but I think you can still buy the Mopar block from Chrysler. I know you could just a few years ago.

If your talking about the aluminum fuel engine block, you can buy it from Mopar but its not theirs, its aftermarket. I don't know whose it is now, but they used to be Keith Black's.
As far as the "Ford" motor, it will just be a massaged version of the Mopar design that says Ford on it.

and it's not really what JFR wants to do... but fuel specs limit it to the elephant design... they wanted to move bore spacing, cam to crank centers, valve spacing and angle... I love an unlimited class were everything is spec... maybe NHRA should just issue engines thursday afternoon... level the playing field, you know....

I'm really confused! I thought fuel motor rules had frozen new technology.

If this is correct, is JFR spending a huge amount of money to produce a clone of the current block and heads in order to have a Ford logo machined on the parts? I'd also be very interested to see if someone can provide a Mopar part number for a fuel motor block!

Nice one Chris...lol

Bottom line you can produce a block and put any name you want on it as long as it has the same specs as the chys. based block that is currently being used as Wes stated the geom. and bore spacing has been mandated by NHRA.

JF better watch out the "cost per run" will probably twice as much as a Mopar motor you know what they say about Fords "fixed or repaired daily" LOL. :D

This is a light-heart jab in case no one as a sense of humor. :)

And here I thought FORD stood for "Freakin Old Rebuilt Dodge" SOOO he might as well build a FORD FUEL motor based off the OLD DODGE.. At least JFR aren't basing if off a CHEBBIE that couldn't stand the pressure ... :p:):D

Yes I'm kidding or am I??

It won't cost JFR anything as Ford is paying for it. Wheter it is a clone or not is irrelevent to Ford as it gives them bragging rights, the average fan wouldn't know or care about the fact that it's basically a copy.
Didn't the Austins have a Hemi block with OLDS cast on the front? That didn't produce much of an uproar.

Having been the manufacturer and only person in recent history (1988-1992) to run a true FORD Boss 429 based fuel engine (top fuel) I wish JFR all the luck. FORD more than likely got tired of all the "negative" press that has been given over the years in the main stream media (print articles including Peterson) to the fact that JFR is actually using Chryler based products to power a FORD sponsored car.

It's just to bad it has to be Chryler based as the "true" FORD has a lot of benefits such as 3" main, 5" bore spacing, simplier oiling, ease to work on (manifold stays on car with heads removed), bolt on rails to allow easy repair etc...

Just my .02 on the subject

"On A quiet night you can hear the Fords rust"
Back in the day there were many a racecar with names other than Chrysler on the valve covers of the 331,354 and 392 Hemis. I always took that as a compliment to the Chrysler design.
It amazes me that Ford would spend a bunch of money for a copy of an existing "spec motor". With the financial problems they are facing I'm sure the stockholders would not be happy. Of coarse if it is just an existing Hemi with some new trick valve covers that say FORD that would make more sense!!!:eek:

It's interesting why Ford won't build (or at least design) a competitive engine for pro stock. I'am sure their are many Ford fans who would like to see them compete.

You got that right.. I'd love to see a factory backed Ford Pro Stock.. But if I read correctly the NHRA wouldn't even allow one of the Gliddens to bring out an OLD Bob Glidden engine.
