What is the average life span of a TF crank? I have heard something like six to eight runs. What is done to the crank once it has reached EOL? I'd like to get one. You know, an expensive door stop. A conversation starter. I saw someone at Englishtown this year who had bought one for $175 but was offering it up for $75 because he didn't want to haul it to the parking area.

This is what I want to know.... + the old rods and pistons too. Melted down and recycled?

Shumacher crank sold at souvenir trailer/Sonoma:

They are, along with blocks, blowers and lots of other megabuck pieces that are still serviceable. DSR can afford a bunch of $4000 cranks. Terry Haddock and Jeff Diehl might not be as fortunate.

Apparently you didn't either :D

Yeah, I know...

I didn't have the cash and was traveling from NJ to RI via train. I didn't
want to lug it around either the departure or the arrival train station by
myself. Next time I think I will drive so I can grab a crank.

I'm the short block and bottom end guy on Bodes crew, and we have a max of 25 runs on a crank before we call it done. Some make it that far and others don't. A lot depends on the tune up. If the engine is happy, the cranks job is much easier, and it looks sweet when it comes back.

If it smokes the tires or puts a hole out the crank and or rods take a beating and sometimes don't survive very long. We've had a couple of cranks break with three runs on them. One broke just before the rear main journal and not only did it destroy the entire short block, it killed everything in the clutch can when the clutch broke free of the rest of the crank at 7800 rpm.

A new one costs about $6k and weighs somewhere around 85 lbs, not much fun to carry for too long. That's why that guy was trying to sell it for $75 lol.

Hey Mike, it looks like you will have a new block and crank for Brainerd, so that will put your inventory back up to five motors. That should put a big smile on your face.

Yeah that's good news. I need to spend a day at the shop to catch up on my work or else I'll be way behind in Brainerd.

Looks like I'll be riding with you in the hauler, if that's ok with Bode.

If you are out at the track on Monday after a national event, alot of teams leave junk cranks by the garbage cans in their pit. We used to have crank throwing contests (see who could throw one the farthest). Hope you don't have a long way to walk!!!:D

Jay
I hear you about the tune up but was wondering if the cranks got as stressed as a Top Fuel crank.

Thanks
