Tennis!

I'm thinking at the end of every race, ESPN2 should hold up the network by broadcasting speeches by Compton, the promoters, and all the winners & runner-ups. That way the NHRA can be just as pretentious as tennis.

Feeling your pain... The problem I have with Tennis (and Soccer) is the scoring is so convoluted you don't know if they are almost finished or just getting started so you don't know if you have time to run to the store or not. :p And don't get me started on soccer. Wait til the game is over then decide how long it's going to go on after... LOL
My current M.O. is to start watching my DVR recording an hour after the event starts then catch up to live broadcast by skipping thru commercials. (your welcome sponsors)...

Forgot races were supposed to start at 7pm
I thought I missed the first few minutes, rushed in the house fired up the TV to find Tennis on lol.

I thought the nhra was going in the right direction with a 7 o'clock start, it started 45 minutes late for tennis, tennis are you kidding and then it was a big rush through the first two rounds it was by far the worst show I ever watched. Somebody needs to get there s##t together if the nhra is going to be survive. I am not a big fan of nascar but they stayed on the air for three hours after they were supposed to go off the air.

For every man, woman and child who cares just a little bit about drag racing there are 8-10 and perhaps many more who play and/or watch tennis. That's why many of the major tennis matches are broadcast on major non cable channels and some during prime time. It's hard to accept but drag racing is a forth or fifth line activity (perhaps lower) and has a very limited fan base. It's always going to be treated like "red headed step child" until its marketed properly.

You should not be able to go in a Wal-Mart (for example) without seeing a pro car on display on a semi regular basis. Every pro team should be required to have 1 or 2 show cars on the road all year long and the drivers should make personal appearances on a regular basis as a condition of entering competition.

See, this proves you can't please everyone. This was exactly the " short and sweet" show others here have been campaigning for.

Was shortened, but not what I would call sweet. (see below)

2 hour show is perfect; but learn how to rush thru PS and PSB, not nitro

They'll get it eventually.

I'm not above giving kudos when deserved. The shortened program was fine by me. When their power was lost, they did the best they could do. I saw three different hand-held cameras (starting line, ~1000' and one in the stands). There's paperwork involved to use someone else's personal recordings, so I give them a thumbs up for hitting the ground running on that deal. At least we saw some video. That one hand-held at ground level at about 1000ft. Now THAT gave you some sense as to the speed these cars go rocketing by a person. Yeah, the wall cuts a lot of the car out of the picture, but it doesn't matter. What you gain in shock value makes up for it and then some. Gives people a sense of what they really look like at speed.

The other thing was Garlits' interview. About the most powerful 5 minute interview I've seen in a long time. My heart ached for the man.

Yea thx again espn, never changes,NHRA GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. I dont know how anyone can watch tennis, but anyway the show was to short, way to short, felt rushed and the format that they showed yuck

I didn't mind so much the "tennis" itself. Gotta finish the game!! It's the long winded speeches afterwards. I've never seen post Superbowl speeches that long. THAT is what I thought was so pretentious. Just hand the freakin' trophy to the winner and get on with the next show. How difficult is that?

Wasn't that Chef Robert Irving I saw as I was fast forwarding on the tennis? WTH was he doing on that show?

If espn doesn't like or want NHRA on their programing, they should just end their contract. But to screw over NHRA fans like they do with EVERY NHRA BROADCAST, just ain't gettin' it. NHRA should definitely be looking for another broadcast company for their races.

Be careful what you wish for!! Those who want to toss ESPN to the curb and have the NHRA get a new TV partner, I can guarantee the only options would be a channel that would require some of you to upgrade your TV package as ESPN is included in most base packages. If that were to happen you would be crying about that as you will say you can't see the show. The telecast will be seen in more homes delayed 30 minutes on ESPN vs. being on a channel like NBC Sports/Fox Sports 1&2/CBS Sports/MAVTV.

Some get it, some don't. Drag Racing is a niche sport whose popularity is declining. We're lucky to get the coverage we get and the NHRA has to pay for that. If they don't fix the product so it gains in popularity the NHRA won't be able to afford the coverage we have now. The problem isn't ESPN it's the current state of NHRA drag racing.

There are now several alternatives for NHRA to look to: Fox Sport One (or Two), NBCSports, CBSSports, MAV TV, heck even Velocity. But the folks at NHRA seem to believe that you aren't a "real sport" if it's not ESPN. That's too bad. I've always felt that it's never a bad deal to be a big fish in a small pond rather than a minnow in the ocean.

Drag racing on TV was covered occasionally on Wide World of Sports and pretty much ignored. It wasn't until the DiamondP / TNN days when it really got legs. Grew like heck, and yet for some reason the NHRA just wanted to compete with NASCAR and follow them "into the big time". Too bad...

I repeat no network with any coverage wants NHRA!! NHRA don't have enough viewers to sell commercials even when it's broadcast in prime time. NHRA is like a 3 year old computer game, some people still play but most have moved on to something else. Any network that would take it doesn't have enough coverage to make it worthwhile or available to those who care.

Forrest Lucas owns MAVTV. I have to believe he'd take NHRA and celebrate the heck out of it if he had it. But, it's not in as many homes as ESPN, certainly, and it's not in HD on DirectTV. But I'm betting the right package could change a bunch of that...

Wish ESPN would lower the sound on the voices from Dunn and Reiff and turn it up on the cars, would much rather here them instead.
