"Street Racing" called "Drag Racing" once again

Drag racing will always be seen by a large part of the media as a bunch of dirtbags waiting to kill themselves or a busload of school children on their way to church with an out-of-control hot rod, while smoking Camel cigarettes.

If you do not contact them and ask them to correct it,it will never change.Be courteous and give a brief explanation on the difference.

2 cars racing side by side, in a straight line, over an agreed distance is called what? and no, I don't care if he was riding shotgun... would perfer they called it street racing, in this case, sports car racing even... but, even nascar calls two cars, side by side off of turn 4 to the stripe a drag race on the last lap... d'kid

Thank you.

And I'll say it again: If people don't get the difference between what they see on the 6pm news, and what they see on Sunday night on ESPN2, then they will never get it, or never cared to begin with.

Not sure where you all are geting you news ........ Paul Walker was the passenger in what was a single car crash, His brest friend Rodger Rodas was the driver, they were leaving a chairity car show in Santa Clarita CA in a Porsche Carrera GT.

Tire blew the car went into a tree and pole the car burts into flames on impact driver and passenger were both killed . Nobody was racing.

I don't like to be pointing fingers, or hijacking someone's thread, but I can't help but think maybe "Street Outlaws" had a part in the media labeling it that. I watched the first episode to see what the hype was about. It gives legitimate drag racers a bad name/bad look. NHRA and everyone associated with it has worked so hard to build a safer environment.

Yeah, they have fast cars. They spend all that money on building cars, and can't take it to a drag strip? Come on now. I know they race on "closed courses", but I just can't get over it. Anything could happen. 1,000hp, and the brakes go out. The car ends up passing the "closed course" onto streets or anything.

It does help get more younger people involved in cars, but I'm just worried what the lasting effect will be with the street mentality they portray on there.

This accident is drawing a lot of attention. I hope it doesn't give drag racing a bad name is what I'm trying to get at. I know how media sites will take one thing and make it into a whole different animal.

Didn't meant to hijack your thread. Just seemed like the right place to add on.

The media, the extremely uneducated media, has been calling street racing drag racing long before that show came out.............

CNN has been saying all day long that drag racing was not the cause of the crash. They said it was simply a one car incident and speed was involved. Their story headline on the scroll even says in bold letters "Drag racing ruled out as cause" while talking about the details.

There was Drag Racing on the streets long before Wally Parks and NHRA came along. Just because NHRA and their members throw a fit does not change the fact that Street Racing is and always has been Drag Racing.

It' doesn't make a difference to me one way or the other, actually. And I'm not convinced that the media's description of street racing as drag racing has a profound negative impact on the sport as a whole. The sport has much bigger issues to address.

They had stirred this pot with those same bold letters yesterday proclaiming the possibility that there was drag racing (i.e. "another car") involved. They're now simply covering their tracks for trying to put some fuel on the fire.

Having said that, the same people that might give the hairy eyeball to sanctioned drag racing because of the media using the term correctly, are the same people that probably think all pitbulls are killing machines, that every hunter just wants trophies on their wall, etc... Personal perception is almost impossible to change. Until there are picketers of "drag racing", brought on by media reports like these, standing outside of a racetrack, I see this as a non-issue.

With the non stop coverage, this is the only place I have seen anything about a tire blowing.

Trey and I attended Paul Walker and Rodger Rodas memorial today, drove 120 miles to get there, there had to be at least 20 thousand people reguardless of what the news may say.

What a cool crowd no drama from anyone, everyone was very respectfull of the community of Santa Clarita, and it was outstanding to see that many young people in there cars, most of which were very nice drift and tuners and very highend sports cars like Skylines, Lambo's, Ferrari's Zo6's R8's and several Shelby's Yes there was some tire spinning and engine reving, all tolerated by L.A.'s finest who were superb and Fine Gentelmen to put on an event of this size for The crowd in attendence, by that I mean "street racers" and young racing enthusiasts, we payed our respects to Paul and Rodger with a few rev-limiter hits in our car as well, It was a somber time paying tribute to Paul and Rodger as we left a diecast car of one of Pauls movie cars in the huge memorial at the crash site we also donated to Pauls foundation, Reach Out World Wide. I encourage all to support the foundation as it will help people who are victom of dissasters around the world.

It was a bittersweet experience today. One I will never forget........................RIP P.W. & R.R...........................LF

I have let some of the Street Outlaws know even though they are on a closed street safety is their franchise to operate .
One crash one fire with no ambulance or fire truck and the show is over .
Making the allure of street racing even though more popular than the Big Show will set Drag Racing back many years in the eyes of the public .
No they are not really " Street Racing " but you wouldn't know it to watch the show .
Oh and RIP Paul and Roger a sad accident . I heard a power steering hose failed spraying a tire .

The irony of this thread and any news report reguarding Paul Walker and Rodger Rodas deaths was Neither of them ever have been "street racers".

Walker was an actor ,Rodas was His buisness and financial advisor, and partner in his race shop and race team, Gee a couple guys from Hollywood with money owning and opperating a race team, like that has never happend.

The real problem here is the meda confusing the public using a movie role an actor played and that the character leading the public to believe was the mans' real..........life.

The use of the words drag racing rather than street racing I get and yes it bugs Me too, but that isn't even close to what happend, and those words really never should have been used at all.
