RECORDS, THRILLS AND SPILLS HIGHLIGHT NT DRAG RACING TITLES

A capacity crowd of approximately 10,000 people packed into the Hidden Valley Drag Strip to see the record book thrown out the window as well as witness plenty of thrills and spills at the 2007 NT Drag Racing Titles yesterday (July 7).

The huge crowd of spectators saw Brett ‘The Boss’ Stevens shatter his existing track record of 6.56 seconds when he scorched down the quarter mile track in 6.02 seconds at 226 mph (364 kph) in his Kitten Car Products Funny Car.

The Funny Car match racing between Stevens and fellow professional racer Steven Reed in his Nulon Engine Oils car saw some spectacular side by side action with Stevens just winning the best of 3 races 2-1.

“The massive crowd was amazing, they were on their feet all night long cheering every pass by every car,” Stevens said.

“I think the Funny Car racing and track record were definitely one of the highlights of the event for them.”

“On the first run Steven (Reed) lowered my existing record to 6.36 seconds and then I reclaimed it again on my second run with a 6.02 second pass.”

“I was really shooting for the first ‘5’ at Hidden Valley on my final attempt of the night but unfortunately the track just wasn’t there for it.”

The Top Doorslammer racing saw Stevens again behind the wheel, but this time in his Jack Daniel’s Racing Falcon, racing in a round robin format with team mates Kath Stevens in the second Jack Daniel’s Racing Doorslammer, Steve Packman in the SP Racing Falcon and Darwin local Matt Able.

Stevens recorded the quickest time in the Top Doorslammer bracket with 7.12 seconds on his first run and subsequently won the with that time on the very slippery surface. However his night took a turn for the worse on his second pass when his 3000 horsepower beast lost traction in the second half of the race track and came in contact with the safety wall.

Despite this however Stevens immediately returned to the pits where he changed into his leathers and mounted up on his Jack Daniel’s Racing Nitro Harley to the cheers of the highly vocal crowd.

Team mate Troy McLean on the second Jack Daniel’s Racing bike was the eventual Top Bike winner though, downing ‘The Boss’ 2-1 in the best of 3 races.

“There were plenty of wild rides by all of the Doorslammers as they struggled to hook up on the slippery track, but the crowd really enjoyed all the action,” Stevens said.

“Unfortunately for me I had some problems on my second run when I smoked the tyres at about half track turning me towards the wall but the car will be ok.”

“We had some similar problems on the bikes with smoking the tyres but still managed to have them up running at around 300 kph which the fans really enjoyed.”

“Congratulations also to Troy ( McLean ) for just pipping me at the post on out final run to take out the Top Bike win.”
