Stott's In The Zone

Columbus, NC - When Quain Stott fires the 526 cubic inch engine on his 1963 LeeBoy Equipment Corvette, he enters the zone. Like most competitors, the "zone" is a switch that gets thrown when the adrenaline starts to flow. In drag racing, it's man, machine and 1320 feet asphalt. The hours of hard work, anticipation and planing culminates in a six second display of a high speed scientific, artful dance where horsepower meets the road.

Stott will have to stay "in the zone" for the Torco Racing Fuels Northern Nationals contested August 4-6 in Martin Michigan. Stott will pull double duty this weekend, racing for points in the national event and racing for dollars in the Knoll Gas - Torco Race Fuels Pro Modified Shootout. The $51,000 challenge will pair Stott's Lee Boy Corvette against two-time Pro Modified Champion, Mike Janis.

"These shootout deals are an all out war," said Stott. "Everyone fights all year long for a shot at this. It's something special. Drag racing means a lot to Evan (Knoll), winning this shootout would mean a lot to us. Evan believed enough in our team to not only be an associate on our LeeBoy car, but then he personally sponsored our "Support Our Troops" car that Tommy (D'Aprile) drives. The money would be nice, but we'd really like to win it for Evan since this is his race and his shootout."

Racing in the shootout is just the beginning of the weekend for the Quain Stott Drag Racing team. Stott's multi-car team finds itself in the midst of a mid-season battle for points. Stott's LeeBoy car is currently second in points just 74 points from the lead and just 62 points ahead of teammate Tommy D'Aprile in the "Support Our Troops" car. Stott joked, "Can you hear the footsteps? They're all around." Stott knows that the tight points means there has been some competitive racing and that mistakes can cost more than ever. "Rounds are always important," he added. "With the points as tight as they are, every round from now until the end of the year will have a big impact on how this deal shakes out."

Qualifying begins Friday, the shootout begins Saturday and eliminations are set for Sunday.

Drag Racing fans should tune into SPEED TV this Saturday, August 5th at 4PM ET or Monday, August 7th at 5PM ET for the Castrol Raceway event held in Edmonton, where Quain Stott brought home the teams first Iron Man of the 2006 season.
