Tell it like it is brother, those WJ haters just don't understand. I'll tell you this,I long for the days when WJ was really speaking his mind unlike the boring @$$ crap we're hearing now.:D

Mike You said what I was thinking......sure miss WJ and KJ at the track

she is shown on quite a few entry lists with charter.com sponsorship.
charter usually flys it's colors with someone at brainerd every year;
tony pedregon and/or a cagnazzi PS

FWIW: I'd like to see more drivers (rather than fewer) out there racing.

That said, a professional shouldn't have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars out of his/her own pocket to entertain US. That's a quick way to go broke.

If the NHRA wants to subsidize a driver (or group of drivers) - if they have the money (which, I suspect, they'd say, they don't) - that would be up to them - it's their show.

There have been plenty of arguments started over How and to what degree the NHRA helps (or hurts) with sponsors.

I don't know how the PGA works but, at least, they pay decent prize money to ensure a full field for their show (and the top Pro Golfer's biggest cash outlay seems to be private jet travel).

Golf courses are a way more profitable entity than a drag strip and golf is a far more watched and participated in sport.
There's always debate about prizemoney, but NHRA is a not-for-profit in theory. There's not some big Scrooge McDuck money bin with all the money inside. You can debate executive salaries and so on sure, but anyway...that leaves the tracks. And while I'm sure they make a bit of money on events they also take on the risk.
We just aren't that big of a sport - but there are people spending some big money on it because they want to win. And that's fine. But the sport can't be expected to subsidise teams to reach that level.

Is it time to start getting radical? What about strapping five pounds (or some other arbitrary number) for every round win a team gets up to a set maximum (100 pounds or whatever)? I might be talking sacrilege here but you can't have it both as a free market and also keep budget teams in with a shot - at least not without an unpredictability factor as we at least see a little bit in the nitro categories (Karamesines defeating Schumacher for instance...)

I do know that Golf (on TV) seems to have pretty well subscribed advertising. There always seems to be the Buicks and IBMs of the world prominently featured (and, I THINK, individual golfer usually have -even the "little guys" have some basic backing to handle expenses)..

Again, simply the capital investment in equipment and crew manpower is sooo different, one can understand the edge golf can have. Still, it's not the NHRA that bears the cost - it's the car team than carries the cost burden.

'Course, if you know anything about "not-for-profits", beyond covering (sometime handsome salaries) they are seldom incented to maximize income.
Maybe NHRA ought to be privatized. Illogical as that sounds, it might put the organization on an overall firmer financial footing and that would be good for the "talent" and the company, no?.

If WJ and KJ had the financial backing the top teams now have he would be right there with them. I appreciate his honesty!

Notice some of the crazy sports that attract big sponsors and big money, golf, fishing, and as silly as it sounds darts. One thing that those sports have over drag racing is the required startup investment is lower.

You can go buy a dartboard and darts, or a fishing rod and some hooks, or a set of golf clubs without spending big money (unless you choose to).

Those sports don't require the hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars required to be competitive.

Say joe blow golfer is watching the golf he can see the brand of clubs his favourite golfer is using and go to the store and buy them.

Sure if you had the money you could buy all the stuff and have a race car like your favourite racers but most people don't.

It costs so much to compete in this sport now that you really need sponsor support or wealthy to take part.

Yes there are little guys out there but they still have to keep their parts supply going.

The engine block of a fueler can set you back 10 grand brand new depending on where you buy it. You can go out and destroy 50 grands worth of stuff in one pass.

I am not saying that that is bad or wrong, just that as much as we want it to be drag racing is not an everymans sport. It is an expensive big money deal.

Still cheaper then nascar though.

I think she is a lock to stay in the Countdown ... So I figure they will be at Indy and then run the Countdown races and see what happens in regards to the Championship. In that light, it is smart to save a few bucks now to make a charge later. Also, it gives the engine guys that much more time in the shop with the primary motors and Connolly that much more time to figure out the chassis setup.

At least this is what I HOPE is happening.

We have a Winner^.....Not to mention Denver is an expensive race for PS'ers!

Another thing, all of those wanting WJ to hang it up,I hope you enjoy watching AJ making a rd 1 bye run. It amazes me that the calls for WJ to quit because he may not be on top of his game right now clap and cheer for the Greek when he runs. You better hope that one of P/S all time greats, his son and others get back out there or the class could become extinct due to the lack of participation.

Only 14 cars made qualifying passes in the first round at Sonoma. If 14 is all that will be there, two cars get to make first round singles, and that's a bad indicator of the class' health.
I figured Denver had less than a full field because of the big (expensive) changes that need to be made to run there.
But, a less than full field at a great near sea-level track like Sonoma is really sad.

There would be a second round bye, but not two first round byes.

There are 15 there, V Gaines didn't get a time slip in rd 1 of qualifying.

I see she's on the entry list for Brainerd. I know that doesn't mean she'll be there for sure though. Just curious, don't they have to pay an entry fee to be put on the entry list? If so it wouldn't make any sense to pay that money then not show up.

Joe

I think the Pros get in free. Only the Sportsman have to pay.
