STEVENS TAKES OUT TRANS TASMAN DRAG BIKE CHALLENGE

Jack Daniel’s Racings Brett ‘The Boss’ Stevens lived up to his reputation as one of the countries top Drag Racers by taking home the honours in the Trans Tasman Drag Bike Challenge aboard his Nitro Harley at the Hidden Valley Drag Strip, NT, last Saturday (August 19) night.

Over 4000 motorsport fans packed into the venue and were not disappointed when seven nitro powered Top Bikes took to the track, with the top three qualifiers all running 6-second passes at over 300 kph over the quarter mile strip.

Stevens made his way through to the Final of Top Bike and was set for a classic Australia V New Zealand battle against kiwi Athol Williams.

Unfortunately the race was unable to live up its billing after Williams suffered fuel problems and did not start the Final. This left Stevens to entertain crowd with a blistering solo pass, before turning his bike around and riding back up the strip to a cheering crowd.

“I really love coming to Darwin, they can’t get enough of their motorsport up here and always get great crowds that enjoy the show.”

“It’s also a credit to the King Cobra Rod and Custom Club that they can organise such a high quality event with a well prepared track.”

“The (track) surface has been a problem up here for a long time but they seem to have really got it to come around.”

“Hopefully we will be able to get a full National Championship Round at Hidden Valley some time soon and get all of the cars and bike up here.”

Another highlight of the Challenge was the record setting performances by Stevens, Williams and Troy McLean aboard the second Jack Daniel’s Racing machine.

Between the three riders they managed to lower the Strip Record on 4 separate occasions with McLean finishing on top of the sheets at the end of the night.

McLean was actually the number one qualifier but was disqualified due to him taking out the last timing block on his final and quickest run.

Not content though with sitting on the sidelines he jumped back on his bike for an exhibition run and wrestled it to a 6.74-second pass, which was nearly a full second under the previous record before the event. Other stand out times included Stevens PB of the night at 6.87 seconds and Williams of 6.88 seconds.

The Trans Tasman Challenge was eventually won by the Australians 19-15 after a strong come from behind effort to win the last 4 passes and take the trophy.

All of the riders will now be packing up and heading to Sydney for the first round of the Australian National Drag Racing Championship, the East Coast Nationals from September 1-2.
