Stanfield sees better results ahead with return of No. 1 motor (1 Viewer)

BRAINERD, Minn. – Greg Stanfield is preparing to stop a slide in NHRA Pro Stock standings that sent him from fourth to eighth place with two races remaining before the beginning of the Countdown to the Championship.

That challenge begins with the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals, Friday through Sunday, at Brainerd International Raceway. Stanfield is now more confident the Nitro Fish/Coffman Tank Trucks GXP team can accomplish the feat because he repaired the primary motor after the three-race Western Swing.

“We’ve been working hard on the motors and we got our number 1 motor ready to go,” said Stanfield, who’s also the team’s engine builder. “Our goal now is to use the next two races to get back into fifth place before the Countdown begins.”

He’s only 34 points (two rounds) behind fifth place and 65 out of fourth in a tight field. Last year he opened Countdown play in eighth place and won the prestigious U.S. Nationals. He was runner-up at Charlotte in the next event on the way to a career-best second-place finish.

“We have a great team,” Stanfield continued. “We can’t afford to make any mistakes and we need to make good decisions. Everybody is pulling together. I'm ready.”
