thats pretty much it .. key thing is read what they are asking for and agree to it all or in parts and go from there....

You being a very learned man I will attempt to reform my question to elicit further scholarly advice from you. Do you think I should look at the comapny offering the sponsorship in regard to their standing in their given industry. Should I research their profit to earnings ratio in the last five years. Are there any tax implications in accepting the money. Would it be better to pro rate the money over time. Should I have any knowledge about the sponsor's product. Finally, are there standardize sponsor packages which detail all the specifics or is the agreement negoiated by the parties involved. What are the do's an don't's in sponsorship.

I'm not a marketing person, but a sponsor is looking for something in return. It could be a way of advertising, so then the demographics of the people attending is important-example: Victoria's Secret is not going to sponsor a car any time soon, damn, but you can see why Ford gave Force money to switch from an Olds body to a Mustang body. Or it could be a way to bring suppliers and employees together to either boost moral or to network.
Yes-there are tax implications to accepting their money-the sponsorship dollars you receive is income for you.
I don't know of a good reference on sponsorship-search the net.

OK.. know we know the direction ot the question a little better...
a companys standing in their area of busines isn't realy a concern.. its your goal through the sponsrship to help grow their company awareness first.. (make everyone know who they are).. second step is to make their busines grow.. most want the growth as the main reason..but making "your fan base"/ spectators at the events you attend aware they exist is the key to their growth .. or benifit from the sponsorship....
Most companys prefer to pay quarterly.. not all but most... alot like a performance clause type deal... offer "X" amount as a standard branding fee of the team ..with bonus's for performance... every thing from "x" amount to go to an event.. then Z more to quailify.. then Y amount for every round you go... ans so on.. dont low ball yourself..but dont over price your self either
YES>. you should know every thing you can about a sponsors product.. even before you sign a deal.. in negotiations its looks much more professional if you do and it gives the air that you are the right person to promote their product or services....
As dave said a potential sponsor is looking for something in return.... but if the preception is its a deal.. getting more than what they are paying for its even better for them to consider... offer personal appearances around events at no charge within a resonable distance.. offer the car on display a day or two before an event if possible... after has very little effect.. before gives someone a reason to come out and watch you at the event....etc... mention the hero cards potential for promotiing them also... many teams miss the mark in that area.. but several make great use of them as sponsor product promotion that will last long after the events...
Biggest do.. be flexable and open minded to what they are interested in doing... you can problably find a way to make it work for both of you....
biggest don't.. dont be forcefull and try not to come off to them desperate or as if its a take the offer now or it goes away type attitude...
i'm sure others could post more but... then some dont want to give secrets away... and the method to landing a good sponsor today is possibly the biggest secret that is kept close to the chest....lol
some may disagree or have a better version of what i posted.. but each deal is completely different....

Just do it. The sky is the limit and all that stuff. Give them everything you can think of and more 24-7! Become an asset to the company and part of their identity. Display, display, display. Websites, t-shirts, handout cards, give-a-ways, charitable events and personal appearances. Make what you got rock. Make it bigger than life. Going down the track is just part of what it takes to find a sponsor and keep one! Never let up!

One thing is to always use the spelling and grammar checkers on any document you send to the sponsor!
