HA! I'm open to anyone beating me to a re-post. The Arghhh in this one is cuz we lost another drag strip.

Yeah; really sucks. My favorite track...; very photographer-friendly. Hopefully it isn't gone forever, but I suspect it is.

A few shots from the top end...

Without any clear indication from the county of the amount of spectators that would
be allowed. Track manager Craig Smith decided to pull the plug, he wanted a longer
term on the lease as well. Bin going to Spokane since 1978 AHRA World Finals.
Love the place, but it has had a dark cloud hanging over the place for the last 20 years.
It opened in 1974

Yeah. It does seem to have that dark cloud. I went to the 85 and 87 "World Finals" when Seattle's manager was having a spat with NHRA.Back then Orville Moe ran it, but ran into some kind of financial battle despite having huge crowds at his Finals events. Then Bucky Austin took over and had more money issues. Now former TF racer Craig Smith. Is it the government making things difficult, or what? Anybody over there know why this facility has so much trouble ?

What I have bin told and read over the years, Orville Moe built the place in 1974 and then ran it into the ground.
With his financial doings, he got in some big time trouble with the city, county and maybe Washington State.
Way to much stuff to write here. I believe before Bucky and Craig two other guys tried a go at it and it didn't
work out. Spokane County has owned the place for number of years now and I think trying to work with the
county to get a lease is a huge problem. I have to give a big thank you to Bucky and Craig they tried!!!
One humor I keep hearing over the years is the casino next door wants to buy the land and you guessed it
turn it into a golf course. Here are some links about Mr. Moe

Here are some videos

Arghhhh Casino.... hello Wild Horse. I'm reminded of the late Speedworld here in Phoenix. Land owned by the state, managed by Maricopa County & leased to whomever. Last guy who ran the track did some illegal stuff like building ramps w/o permits and extending the off road track past the legal boundries of the track. He got into a big legal battle & lost. We lost too, cuz track closed. I guess there is fault on both sides at times. I feel bad for the racers in Spokane. Where do they go now? Long tows.....

Arghhhh LOL... Where do they go now?
Walla Walla,WA the closest to Spokane
Yakima, WA
Seattle
Boise

Hell schedule a protest after the drag races and it would be a go !

Jim, are all these tracks open for racing? Seattle seems kinda up in the sir now.
All tracks are open and racing. The only problem is no fans allowed at Washington State tracks.
Boise, ID can have some fans. All tracks last year raced, there weekly bracket races. Seattle and Boise
had there Div 6 races last year. Will we have the National Event at Seattle, only time will tell.
Might have to go to Boise to one of there major events, but YIKES 8 hour drive for me, you loose
an hour MST
Seattle
Yakima
Walla Walla
Boise

My family lives in the Avondale area, and from 95-97 I lived in Scottsdale, so while I was living out there we would go to Speedworld and it was a blast. I helped a buddy who ran a 7.90 dragster at the time. Great little track, with kind of a "cozy" feel to it. I remember there was a little restaurant deal real close to the starting line on the left side of the track. Really hurts when we lose tracks...

The 7.90 class was great. Good mix of cars, almost like Pro Comp. Miss that class.
It was a cool class. The guy I helped once or twice was Vito Adragna, and I also got to help his brother Danny at a divisional at Firebird in Chandler, with his TAD. Great memories.

Thanks so much for all of your research there Jim. Moe was certainly an interesting story ! If I remember correctly Moe was also involved in the end of AHRA, the short lived ADRA, then the short lived rebirth of AHRA in '87. Those associations were never the fine tuned machine that NHRA was, but losing them, and now Spokane's track is a loss for the racers and fans. Too bad nobody else has found success there either. Like you said, at least they tried !
