The 2007 NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Motorcycle Champion, Matt Smith is just a mere 12 points out of the lead and he is looking to take the top spot this weekend at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pennsylvania.
Coming off of his third win in the 2008 season last weekend in Brainerd, Minnesota, Smith is hoping his new bike will keep running as planned.
“We debut our new bike last week at Brainerd,” said Smith. “And needless to say it ran very well. We wanted to make sure we had in broke in by the time the Countdown got here, so it looks like we are headed in the right direction. Hopefully this weekend at Reading it will be no different.”
Smith has been fighting 10 kidney stones over the last few weeks and has still managed to somehow keep his cool. Not yet passing even one stone, Smith is still suffering from massive pain, but will continue to try and keep his focus on the prize, which is the top seed going into the Countdown.
“We want to be No.1 going into Charlotte,” said Smith. “You get a 30 point advantage if you’re on top, so of course everyone wants that. If we can keep running the way we did last weekend with this new bike I think we can get it, but we will just take it one day at a time and see what happens.”
Smith sits in the second position in the Championship point standings. He is less than one round out of the lead and is looking to steal the top spot in Reading.
Smith also competes on Thursday in the NHRA Softball Game with the Brown Burn Down Bombers.
