Smith and Phillips

The sad thing is that Phillips took two sayings that don't have anything to do with race.....and turned them into racial slurs.

Showing your true colors =

To "show one's true colors" refers to an individual who has been masking or hiding their true nature, but finally acts or behaves in a way that is more in keeping with their natural character. In the movie, Sleeping Beauty, the evil queen shows her true colors, by letting out an evil laugh, after the princess bites into the poisoned apple.

Calling a spade a spade =

To "call a spade a spade" is to speak honestly and directly about a topic, specifically topics that others may avoid speaking about due to their sensitivity or embarrassing nature. Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrase and Fable (1913) defines it as

“ To be outspoken, blunt, even to the point of rudeness; to call things by their proper names without any "beating about the bush".

The phrase was introduced to English in 1542 in Nicolas Udall's translation of Erasmus, Apophthegmes, that is to saie, prompte saiynges. First gathered by Erasmus:

Philippus aunswered, that the Macedonians wer feloes of no fyne witte in their termes but altogether grosse, clubbyshe, and rusticall, as they whiche had not the witte to calle a spade by any other name then a spade.
It is evident that the word spade refers to the instrument used to move earth, a very common tool. The same word was used in England and in Holland, Erasmus' country of origin.

The phrase predates the use of the word "spade" as an ethnic slur against African-Americans, which was not recorded until 1928; however, in contemporary U.S. society, the idiom is often avoided due to potential confusion with the slur.

Kelly, you would love the Oxford English Dictionary.

If the tech dept tore Philips' bike down and found nothing, that is enough proof right now.

This is the same tech department that tore down Billy Glidden's Pro Stock. Billy later gave an interview to a magazine stating that he used Nitrous Oxide on that car and explained how he did.

Just because someone passes Tech does not mean they aren't cheating, it just means they are smart enough to not get caught. If you think its not happening go to Google and do a search on Drag Racing Traction Control.

They couldn't find the nitrous on the Wayne County cars either.

I'm totally stunned/amazed that it took till Wednesday for this to hit Mater.

Didn't anyone catch Michael's top end interview Sunday? He made it pretty darn clear that he thinks that Matt is a racist.

But, who watches PSB on TV? ;)
Thank goodness for my DVR.

They couldn't find it in Eckman's either...well not until he accidentally showed it:D

Neither guy comes off looking too good in this one. I'm all for having some real rivalries but the race card is over used and discredits real race issues and after they get through tech...no matter what that means you have to either be specific as to how they cheat or just beat their ass.

So if they keep jawin at each other pick new topics and go

Hey let them then bump heads give eachother some sore noses then they can shake hands have some man hugs and go have a couple of beers. Nobody gets on well with everybody.

I just remembered another one they goofed: They couldn't measure the displacement of Steve Johnson's bike engine properly either. That was a fiasco.

Thank you guys for sharing the info about Billy G. and the doge boys... NHRA never found the stuff... I can tell everyone this I'm not a Racist and never will be... I know numbers on the race track and when someting looks funny I will say something to that person.... At Sonoma Hector went 6.847 and went 2.478 down the back half witch is really good, but only 2nd to what Micheal went when he went 6.87.... MP went a 2.457 down the back... Thats what throws up the red flag is his backhalf numbers... The bikes are very arrow sensitive and when you hang off the bike or move your head around it slow the backhalf numbers down and speed also.. Ever watch Mike run on tv... He is always looking over at the other race in 5th and 6th gear... To me thats judging how fast you need to go... Vance and Hines his engine builder said he does not have that much power to go that fast.... Nobody else wants to say anything cause there scared of whats going on now... I don't care if someone is pissed off at me, I just want everybody to be far.... Matt Smith

Hello Matt, Carl here....

A quick question and then a few comments and observations, if I may.

I'll assume the cheating you're making reference to is the use of a hidden nitrous oxide system on Michael Phillips' Suzuki. It's best not to go into details here on this forum, however, I'm pretty sure this is the cause for concern. Has he been teched; torn down? A ProStock car has places to hide a NOS system a bike wouldn't have - is it physically possible to hide such a system within the confines of a Pro Stock motorcycle and render it undetectable?

As for the race component, I heard it on both sides, and to be frank, his side struck me as proactive; yours, reactive. My only advice, for what that's worth, is to walk - no, RUN - from this aspect of things as fast as you can. A discussion of race, or a discussion with racial overtones, cannot be settled in a favorable manner in America today. If Phillips, or anyone else, can draw you into that arena, you don't stand a chance; your allegations of cheating will be lost like a fart in a tornado and the next thing you know the media will brand you a racist. I'm not alleging that's what he's doing. I'm saying don't allow it to happen, under any circumstances. And, it goes without saying, don't YOU be guilty of doing the same thing. It works both ways.

I don't know you personally; what I do know of you is what I've seen on TV coverage, read in magazines and heard from other racers. It hasn't all been positive, however, it's hearsay as far as I'm concerned and I'm no prince, either. And I'll be honest. Most of what I've seen of Michael Phillips is chip-on-the-shoulder arrogant. I'll say it right to his face if I'm ever given the chance. That may be an unfair assumption...some will say he's really decent off-track... but I call 'em like I see 'em...and that's what I see of him. Arrogance.

I'll say this in conclusion. You are a professional in a sport that everyone on this forum is attached to in one way or another. As much as we all enjoy a good rivalry, it must be kept on a professional level and as a high-profile ambassador to the sport it's your responsibillty to handle yourself as such. If you have bona fide proof of cheating, present it to NHRA and let them do the rest. Perhaps you have already.

If it's strictly your opinion at this time, it's MY opinion that it's in your best interests, and the best interests of the sport, to keep it close and not publically accuse the man of cheating during the course of an interview and on public discussion forums such as this one.

That being said, all of us hope this unfortunate episode blows over quickly and we can all get back to watching you and your Dad win some races. The best of luck to you, my friend.

Respectfully, Carl Lowell

“If he really thinks he is that much of a rider, and he can out ride me, then me and him, all we have to do is take the wheelie bars off our bikes, and he can leave his hand clutch in his bike and I will leave the hand clutch in my bike, and I’m going to show him who the better man is."

Oh oh--I see it now--new t shirts out- "My wife rides the no bar bike in the family"

( I hope more than 3 people get the joke) ;)

I could be wrong here, but isn't 6.847 faster than 6.87? Hector must be cheating.
