See, I told you so…. (Housing Market and Iraq) (1 Viewer)

When I graduated from College I purchased a Town House in 1987. Got married in 1990 and after 7 years living in the Town House brought home a GMC Dually 4-Door and it would not fit in the Garage. Told my dear Wife it was time to move. Reluctantly she caved in and we built a house for 134K and sold the Town House for 90K leaving the closing with $9.87 in our hands we decided to split a Cheese Burger and Fries at Wendy's with the money instead of buying a 12 pack (keep in mind this was after making payments on 2 properties for 18 months).

Fast forward to April 07 I get a call from a realtor telling about a dream come true. 28.87 Acres less than 10 miles from our business. For 25 years I have searched high and low for 20+ acres within 15 miles to build a modest house and a nice shop and all I could find was multi-million dollar lots surround by fences with Beans planted, Power Lines overhead or Pipe Lines running under it. No trees...no nothing.

To my surprise the elderly couple that lived there since 1946 and purchased the "1/4" (40 acres) for $600.00 (at $10.00 per month) and wanted a quick close on the property. I drove my Wife out there, her arguing the whole way we don't need to move until she saw it. 28.87 acres of solid mature Oaks with a run down hand build house from used lumber with Pole Shed on it. She fell in love with it.

I met the owners that day and to make a long story short helped them fix their car and the deal was basically done. While standing in the entry way also the Eating Area I noticed a picture sitting on a table. A picture of a Super Pro Car in the Winners Circle. I inquired who that was. The Elderly couple said it was their Son-in-Law and Daughter from Surprise AZ Butch and Stephanie Warner. We talked a little about racing and Robert, the elderly gentleman and I were soon friends.

From April until July 4th weekend when they left for Augusta GA I went there every night and weekend we weren't racing and helped them clean and organize the place. We hauled 18,900 lbs of scrap steel, 64 tires and 100 cubic yards of concrete block from the property. Robert's health was poor, mentally sharp as a tack but physically shot. He said he would get tired watching me work. To this day I call him and his wife weekly to see how they are doing and give them updates on the "farm".

After taking possession of the property I was offered 3 times what I paid for it. I told the guy they don't make dirt anymore. I also made a promise to Robert and Margaret I would take care of their land and make them proud. My Wife and I have also become good friends with Stephanie and keep in touch.

The crew comes out at least every other weekend for Team Building Activities like Chain Sawing 48 inch Dia Trees, Splitting Wood, digging holes with a Backhoe and Bonfire Supervision to make room for an 18,000 sq ft shop...oh, and Deanna's (my Wife) house.

It was the best investment I have made yet. Now if I can get 75% of the Tax Assessment of the current house I will have come out far ahead on the house deal.

There is more to an "investment" than money!

Butch Warner is now the manager of Speedworld Motorplex here in Wittmann. We know him quite well. He even signed my middle son's dragster license. Isn't it a small world.

Thanks for the story. I believe it was Will Rogers who said "Buy Land. They don't make any more of it."

I'll only question the climate in which you chose to reside. The investment was wisdom personified!

I bought a 1712 sq. ft. house in CA in 2003 for $243,000. I sold it in 2005 for $450,000 and moved to Oregon. I can now buy a house exactually like the one I sold, 4 doors down for $249,000. Crazy.

Next time you see Butch, tell him I said hello. I have not met Butch face to face. We tried to meet up at PRI this year but did not cross paths. Talked to him on the Phone. His Wife Stephanie came to Minnesota to help her parents pack and make the long journey to Augusta in July. She came back in August and Deanna and I took her out to dinner. Very nice lady...so tell Steph I said hello too.

Yes this mud ball we live on called Earth gets smaller everyday!

I love the 4 seasons. I like the cold weather. Wednesday I was outside from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm in the -14° weather. Came back in the office and I was roasting. This morning it is a balmy 11° with a high of 26° today I migh be in a Tee-Shirt...

:D

Come on Paul...at least get the spelling right...H"E"ROLD...

Maybe, "Bad Caribou Racing?"

Actually we are running under GDS Racing...and Bauerly Racing...

GDS: Gotta do something (Jerry Hemmingson's favorite saying)

Bauerly Racing would be Mike and Dean Bauerly, a father and son that Race Sportsman Cars. Mike drives a RJ '05 Corvette with a R&M 747 and Dean drives a RJ '02 Cavlier with a R&M 632. Dean is my Team Manager and his father Mike is just a down to earth guy trying to help a small fish in a big ocean try and make it. Great friends and great support. Met Dean after I eliminated him in the Semi's at a Top 10 Shootout at Brainerd. I ran out of CO2 so I asked him since he was on the trailer if I could borrow his CO2 Bottle. We won the deal that weekend and the rest is history...

Iraqi people (on video) wishing Saddam was still in power.

Samuel, I would dare you to go to aliraqi – global Iraqi Community (the largest Iraqi message board in the world) and post a poll question about that, except that I have posted links for this site there, (exposing many Iraqis to their first views of the sport of drag racing). I'm afraid one or more of them may have joined this site and would know your name and what state you're from.

I still have the same view on Iraq that I've had for a couple of years. Our government says we'll pull out when there's a perception that the Iraqi people can take care of themselves but, nobody wants to say exactly what the definition of that is.

The thread on that board that sticks in my memory more than any other. An Iraqi IN Iraq described how thugs came around (when our soldiers were not around) threatening ice salesmen in Baghdad, saying how ice was not available commercially in Allah's time so, they should not be selling it now. They were laughed off. A week later they came back and shot and killed one in broad daylight. The rest packed up and went home. The poster of the thread said he wanted to tell them that AK-47s were not available in Allah's time, either.

My reply to that was that we should have firearms courses for 25 million people while handing out 25 million pistols. Like I told the guy who posted that thread; "If 20 of you would pull pistols out and shoot a thug when they shoot one of you while trying to enforce their illegal laws? See how long they want to play that game!" That's my definition of the Iraqi people taking care of themselves against armed criminals. Just like in this country, every person can't be assigned their own personal police officer to follow them around 24/7. I was mostly agreed with, too.

Even the Republicans would probably think that stance would be political suicide, and they're too big a sissies to do it. They're the ones who once again proved that tax cuts work and then went three election cycles without even running on cutting taxes again! You think they're gonna run on arming Iraqis?

I once heard that socialism is communism in drag. I think we're going to see that secular progressiveness is socialism with a boob job.

Check out this thread along with this quote

U should think about it this way as well... Most of the people doing the killings now are people whom were killing Iraqis during Saddam, the bast*rd son of Ouja is still killing people even tough hes 6 feet underground.

More than one million Iraqis dead since US-led invasion - aliraqi Community

Another good post from the same thread.

Saddam isn't the only one behind the killings. People aren't fools! at least some . Saddam killed millions but others contributed to the massacre of the iraqi people. Alqaida/wahabis, iranian militias and political-islam are behind the killing of the iraqis since the fall of the dictatorship.

And another.

I believe that these statistics could have been exaggerated by people who do not believe that the war against saddam was necessary and are therefore going to this length to prove themselves. If these statistics were real then there wouldnt be many Iraqis left in the world!

Yeah, ask THOSE people if they want Saddam back! THEY'RE Iraqis!

This point is, out of millions of people, I'm sure you can always find SOMEONE who will come on camera and agree with whatever you want them to. You can't be on that board around real Iraqis and get the sense that the majority of them wish that Saddam was still in power.

This thread has 142 replies. See if IT gives you the impression that they wish Saddam was back! Notice the date that the thread's title is celebrating.
