Seattle 2025

Yeah, Paul, it’s been what like over five years since we’ve had a bad top fuel crash.?
Last one I witnessed in person was Steve Torrence in Dallas but that's been nearly 8 years ago. It wasn't catastrophic but it was pretty bad. He unloaded his backup car and made the next round.

I don't think anything is going on with the front tire. If you look just behind it, it appears what looks like the puffs you're describing are body panels flexing due to a vibration going through the chassis.

Wendland will have this figured out in short order. Dude is a genius.
Oh man, you are so right! I was so focused on the edge of the tire I didn’t look at the rest of the body. Sorry!

Dan, you’re right. When I saw the video last night, it was on my phone.
Today, I watched the qualifying highlights on my television and could see the body panels flexing.

NHRA Top Fuel team owner-driver Shawn Reed and the spectator injured by debris from his wrecked dragster Saturday during qualifying at the Muckleshoot Casino Resort NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways are recovering.

Reed was hurt Saturday afternoon when his 12,000-horsepower dragster suffered a right-rear tire failure as it clocked a speed of 290 mph. That broke the rear wing of his Reed Trucking and Excavating Dragster, sent the car into a cross-track spin nose-first into the opposite-lane wall, then banged the guardwall in his original lane, shooting shattered parts of the car in all directions.

Shawn Reed was injured on Saturday after his NHRA Top Fuel dragster crossed the center line and went into the wall.
Reed was treated at Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center Sunday morning.

According to the team on Sunday, "in addition to two fractured ribs, the Washington native sustained injuries to his left hand, resulting in the loss of his left pointer finger and requiring that a pin be placed in his thumb."

Reed was already talking about returning to action just one day after the crash.

“Obviously, you never want a race weekend to go like that, but I’m already on the mend,” said Reed, after undergoing surgery on Sunday morning for the hand injury sustained in the crash. “First of all, I want to thank the Safety Safari and the whole NHRA team for everything they do to keep us safe out there. We have the best fans in the world, and I appreciate all the thoughts and prayers from our extended racing family.
"I’m going to be back out there as soon as I can. I don’t have a target return date as of yet, and it may require a little adjusting, but it’d take a lot more than one missing digit to keep me down. There’s nowhere I’d rather be than back out at the track, behind the wheel of my dragster, chasing that Wally.”

The woman injured by debris from the accident, a fan attending the race and watching beside her family’s motorhome that was parked near the dragstrip, was airlifted to Harborview, as well, as a precaution for a potential head injury, according to Pacific Raceways President Jason Fiorito. She was treated and released around 2 a.m. local time Sunday and is resting at home.

“She has a heck of a headache, and she got some stitches,” Pacific Raceways President Jason Fiorito said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family because they’re part of our family. They were at our track, and they were watching the sport we all love. They’re part of our motorhome fan base. We’re glad her injures aren’t as severe as they could have been.

“This pulls on my heartstrings,” Fiorito said. “The safety of our fans is paramount.” And generally speaking, he said, the safety measures in place at the facility are satisfactory. “It’s an unusual incident. Parts don’t usually fly around.” He said he and his staff will “analyze everything” and see what measures the track might be able to implement to make it even safer.

Oh Shawn! So sad for you buddy. Godspeed.

a track owner verbally disappointed about low racer turnout. solution: more money for the racers. easy right? (sarcasm)

when there's 4k per each nitro class availabe for low e.t. in lone friday night session, what do you think the teams are going to do?
putting up money for that session was maybe not the smartest move. cars launch, tire shake or smoke, and shut it off. no harm.
car hooks, then go for it.
what the track owner should ask himself about his friday night session, is what were differences or similarities between his conditions under
portable musco lighting, with a cooling track with fresh track prep, and the friday session in early february at bradenton during the pro shootout?,
which IMO had to be very similar, right down to the musco lighting...... a session that yielded a 4.79 in FC. that track hooked.

Maybe due the VMP program, 3 rounds on Saturday and non on Friday. Possibly saves a hotel night.

I believe the track location itself had more to do with the weak turnout than anything else. If you're a small PSM team from the midwest or east coast/New England area, figure up what it costs to get your team and equipment all the way to Seattle for 3 days, compete for 3 days and then return home. $30,000 wouldn't be out of the question and for those smaller lightly-sponsored or non sponsored teams, it's just not worth it. Same deal for the fuelers, only it's a hell of a lot more money. So why the light fields in those 2 classesthis year when in years past all the Pro classes were full? I don't know.

Most of the sponsored big-team Top Fuel cars were present - Torrence was an exception - but those who customarily round out a 16-car field (and have little chance of advancing to a points championship) just stayed home. I don't believe the 1-and-3 format had anything to do with it. One thing I can't explain - despite great conditions and rockstar performances on Sunday I bet that race didn't draw 5000 people for the finals. You ain't gonna cut the nut with attendance like that.
