Run of the Year

That photo of the side of the car. Better make the cover of the 2017 Snap On Calendar.
That's a once in a lifetime picture.

Let's not forget Snake did the same thing many years ago I believe in Seattle. See pic.

I was there last weekend, sitting on the GA side at the end of the bleachers and I still don't understand how it wasn't a blowover. It was probably the craziest wheelstand in a funny car I have ever seen. While discussing it afterwards, we started pontificating about what was the craziest wheelstand we had ever seen. Several members of the group said, by far, was Jim Head's wheelstand at the Texas Motorplex back in the mid 90s. He carried the wheels 1,000ft an still ran a 4.97 when running sub 5 in the quarter would still get you qualified and past a round or two.

PS: I miss the "Head Girls"

Body tethers were mandatory until Johnny Gray tried to blow the body off, but instead the body just crumpled and left the firewall right in his line of sight. They've since become optional...

Funny cars have a long L-shaped slot mounted to the tree on the chassis that a main cross bar in the rear body tree slides into. Effectively creates a hinge so they can lift the nose of the body without pulling the whole thing off. The parachute lines are attached to the chassis under the rear end, if the body was to fly completely off, the parachutes would come out of their packs on the body since the lines are still attached to the chassis. With Cruz' deal, you can see the main cross bar is out of the chassis mounts, so the only thing I can figure is that he had body tethers holding it in place. See the hook just behind the right side tire? That's where the rear of the body mounts. I can't believe that the only thing holding that body on are the front hooks.

No tethers on rear of body, front latches held body on.

that photo sequence is most likely in top ten category of all-time best drag racing photo sequences.....unbelievable

I used to come on the Mater way more often ... just now paid a visit and saw the nice comments about my photo sequence of Cruz's wheelstand. A classic case of a lot of luck and a little bit of skill. It also shows that you can get some pretty decent shots from the grandstands.

Harry Canoles - It is indeed a once in a lifetime sequence of pictures. Who knows, it might make the Snap-on calendar since Snap-on (as well as Hot Rod) purchased the pictures from me.

I was also lucky enough to get a 20+ shot sequence of Garrett Bateman's huge injected nitro explosion and fire at the Divisional race the following weekend.
