With the season opening event of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing series just a day away the Steve Kent Racing Pro Stock team finds itself back in Houston after the Pro Stock Showdown in Las Vegas this past weekend. The four days spent testing at the Strip in Las Vegas revealed that a problem believed to have been taken care of late last season was still around, and that problem has forced the team to revise their plans for the first few weeks of the 2009 season.

With the belief that last year’s gremlin had been tamed the team focused the majority of the off season on the new in house engine program, completing a pair of engines that showed strong performance potential on the dyno. As the team rolled into Las Vegas, optimism was high and with the addition of the highly experienced Jerry Eckman to the team, everyone was looking forward to starting the 2009 season with a strong showing. Unfortunately the problem encountered late last year resurfaced during the testing laps in Vegas and continued to confound everyone on the team, including the highly experienced Eckman.

With the start of the season at hand and the team anxious to get on track and see how their engines performed against the rest of the field, the offer of another chassis got the attention of team owner Steve Kent, and the decision was made to head back to Houston, skip Pomona, and re-group with the Arizona Nationals race in Phoenix now the main focus of the team.

As Rodger Brogdon put it, “Missing Pomona is the last thing that we wanted to do, but knowing what we were up against, we knew something had to be done. Fortunately for us the downturn in the economy allowed a Jerry Bickel car to become available at just the right time. Even with the other problem we were dealing with, our new engines showed that they have some real potential. We’ll have the car in house by the end of this week, and be on track testing next week. The extra test laps will give Eckman, Dr. Phil, and the rest of the crew some additional time to get the new chassis dialed in.”

Look for Rodger Brogdon and the Steve Kent Racing team to debut at Firebird Raceway in Phoenix, AZ February 20-22 as the NHRA Full Throttle tour makes its second stop on the 2009 Full Throttle tour. Race results are available for every NHRA National event on line at www.dragracecentral.
