Did anybody do a season-long points tabulation for this year? I know that we had one last year.

Yeah, the "Real" points champs are the ones who won under the "Real" points structure for this year. The "Real" champs were given the check and trophy last night in LA. Your "Real" Champs are Tony Schumacher, Cruz Pedregon, Jeg Coughlin, and Eddie Krawiec.

I can't take credit for this, but Tyler Helton posted in a thread at insidecompracing.com:

www.insidecompracing.com - A Thought on the Countdown

"By qualifying this weekend, Jeg wrapped up the championship. If they were still racing under the old points format, the Pro Stock championship would have gone down to the very last round of the year between Anderson and KJ. The final standings under the old format would have been:

1. Greg Anderson 1,672
2. Jeg Coughlin 1,657
3. Kurt Johnson 1,649

So much for creating excitement that didn't exist before."

Nobody asked for a smart a$s comment. He asked if anybody figured the points the old way. I knew that Wilkerson and Schumacher would have won but didn't realize the prostock deal would have turned out like it did.

Thanks for the Civil response Dan

Paul it's pretty obvious by the title of the thread that this was just going to piss you off so why did you bother clicking on it and reading it?

Then the title of the thread should have stated "OLD" Points Champs. When you say "Real" it means who are the actual champs. Just pointing out the obvious, thanks for reading.:D

I've got to agree with Paul on this one. The 4 Champions that Paul mentioned are the "Real" Champions. They won it fair and square by the "Real" rules layed out at the beginning of the season.

This of course assumes that every team would've raced the exact same way in every race without the countdown. The "team orders" would've been just the same, driver's anxiety levels would have been just the same, and so on.

There were seasons that came down to the last run under the old system, and there are seasons that get clinched several runs in advance under the new system. Only two championships got decided on Sunday this year, and none on the last run of the day. Whatever...

To me, it's kind of like watching basketball -- every basketball game has two minutes where the game is decided. You just have no idea when those two minutes are going to be. They could be at the start of the third quarter, or they could be the last two minutes. The rest of the game is like watching ping-pong, back and forth, back and forth. Yawn... All a playoff system does is force the deciding race/run to be during the playoffs.

Sorry, Paul, but the title is correct as posted. If there had been no quotation marks around the word "real", you would have a point. In common usage quotation marks around a non-quoted word denote a modification often including opposite meaning.

People get so fired up about this stuff.

It is what it is.

I personally enjoy each race, dont really care about the champ. Theyre in town for me once a year. How they do that particular weekend is all I really care about.

The question is did the countdown bring in more fans? If it did, then mission accomplished - the countdown was a success. If not, then ask did it drive fans away? If it drove fans away, then mission failed.

At least with this particular issue, the NHRA is trying to drum up fans, make it more exciting. So whats wrong with that?

If it wasn't for the Countdown the 2007 Funny Car title would have been decided on the last run of the year (granted Hight would have running his teammate but that's another story for another day). It's provided 2 out of 8 legitimate champions. Greg Anderson has gotten the short end of the stick now for 2 straight years, in both cases Jeg won the title with what would have otherwise been a solid 2nd or 3rd place season. Hot Rod's 07 and Wilkerson's 08 were very similar both car's which didn't have big budget's were bitten by the countdown that was supposed to help them.

TV ratings were up last year leading into the countdown. Not only could they not maintain the new ones drawn, they lost them as well as many other fans as the countdown races dropped below the ratings of those same races previous years

I still believe most of that loss was due to Football season, and not the countdown..

but I still don't like the countdown.

They should just hold a vote. Advertise it all next year to go to NHRA.com and vote. Have voting booths at events. Make it legit.

Give the results at Indy. The winning format finishes the season.

If it is really about the fans isn't this the most logical method?

Last year Robert Hight would have took the F/C championship when he won the Finals, the countdown screwed him too!

i agree. i myself watch sunday night football this time of year instead of racing.

Football has been around every season that drag racing has been on. its not new. The numbers were not just down from the regular season but also compared to previous years, which went against football then too

I like that, however in the interest of fairness I'd like an independant source to keep track of it.

That is the funniest thing i have read. ABOUT THE FANS !!!!

PJ...

I haven't watch much qualifying on the tube this season, and didn't see any of P2... caught a little of V2, watched all but the first ten minutes of Richmond (yeah, live that close, left track about 5:30)... no elvis, some dallas, caught most of Charlotte...

reading, the Zoo, caught all... Western Swing, fell asleep during shows... liked the Bristol broadcast.... live finals...

Problem is I'm listening to the Audiocast and TV starts before the race is done, and I'm not staying up until 1AM to watch Qualifying... and if Sundays are delayed, I do fall asleep before the broadcast is over...

and this is from a hardcore flopper fan, who has stats of every pass all season on legal pads...

d'kid

Thanks, Dan, for picking up on the sarcasm. I sometimes forget that context is lost when typing, even though punctuation is used. I was plagiarizing actually, using a reference from the trophies that were given by DRO last year to honor the persons who would've won under the old system.

I am neutral on the Countdown, as currently used. 2007's two-race-dash going from 4 to one was too quick and resulted in some strange things, but a "playoff" from Carolina to Pomona is acceptable to me.

I want the old point system back.
I want 1320 back.
I want Wally Park back alive.
I want PS/T back.
I want M/P back.
I want no electronics in super back.
I want Diamond P coverage back.
I want double points at Indy back.
I want points for MPH record back.
I want $ 10 tickets back.

Then it will be "real" drag racing again.
