THE nhra PAYS ESPN (PAYS!!!!!) to air their shows.

Full throttle...Glad handing...

GIVE me the Vitamin water deal at Coca Cola...1 BILLION.!!!!!!!!!!!!
Powerade budget this year...........................10 Million (all in!!!!)

Dont fight me ...Those #'s came from JON ASHER. !!!

PS-RCR has 5 sponsors and 4 cars for nxt yr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL-I say WE (us drag guys) BUY RICHARD CHILDRESS A FUELER and see what HE can DO!!! ( Rich uses his WALLET for personal use only!!!!)

Don't forget that Winston was paying out $12 Mil. per year to NHRA! With Powerade at what $3 per year? That's NOT Growth in my book.

Wow. You guys would whine if you found a $5 because it won't buy a tank of gas. Considering most businesses are tightening their belts, any increase is good. It's still an extra 1.3 million up for grabs, better than nothing.

I'll be the first to take NHRA to task for the inadequate payouts, but at least they are going in the right direction for once.

I take the increase as my dad tellin' me my allowance went from 25 to 30 cent for cuttin the grass.
WHAT will I DO with the money...............................................

I don't know. NHRA doesn't tell racers how much to spend. The racers decide for themselves.

I don't think there is any form of motorsports that has a purse structure that covers the racer's expenses. Racers need sponsorships to survive or at least own an Air Cargo Company that possibly ranks as the sixth largest fleet of aircraft when compared to countries around the world with an air force.

Maybe I'm goofy, but I think NHRA has made a good faith jesture in the right direction considering the economy and fuel prices, which I'm sure NHRA is feeling, too.

I hope a couple bucks filters down to TA/FC.

Good post Randy. As others have said, in the midst of everyone tightening their belts, NHRA raised purses. Would we all like more? Should Indy pay a huge amount more? Absolutely. But I still think it's a positive move. Like you said, Randy, purses will never be able to foot the bill for every racer's expenses, which is true in every form of racing. In addition to the purse increases, NHRA needs to give even more attention to containing costs and attracting more companies to the sport.

Don't be so sure of that. Even the mega teams are cutting back. Lots of cars being parked, lots of crew guys and support people out of work. Their grass might be taller, but it's not looking too green right now.

Did you give your dad back the nickel or did you keep it and buy an extra gum ball?

Excellent post Randy. I hope you guys get some love too. Raceres are going to race regardless of what it costs, any extra they get is just icing on the cake.

Take a look at this -
Nascar Money, Most Money Won, Nascar Driver Winnings
Keep in mind that this is the top earner in Nascar each year in race winnings. As big as $7M sounds, that's no were near enough to run a full schedule for a cup car, and in most cases the team owner doesn't get much of any of the purse to begin with. Nascar owners are making their money from merchandising.

While I think we all can agree that it isn't enough I will say that it is a step in the right direction.

If they had stayed the same again, or even dropped it, we would have all gone nuts on here bashing them. They moved it up, which we have all been clamoring for, don't be afraid to tell them good job. Do we want more? Of course, but Rome wasn't built in a day. A raise is a raise.

Hey Christopher, thank you very much for the link!
Check out NASCAR.COM - How money is distributed - Apr 28, 2008. It explains (sort of) how NASCAR does it. Just one example: Jeff Gordon got over $90k for finishing 36th in one race (and that was the 5th highest payout in that race).

But no matter what, even in NASCAR, purses don't pay to run, even in the pros (and especially in sportsman). The ONLY way to break even racing is to have a good collection of sponsors. Period.

I applaud NHRA for doing something. Not a heck of a lot, but it's moving the needle in the right direction.

Hey Rich, I know nothing about round track racing thats why I am asking. I am shocked on some of the replys here. 20 million dollars to sponsor a nascar team, per year? I hate to ask this, but what would it cost to sponsor a nitro funny car or top fuel team for a year. And what does the NHRA get from ESPN? Thanks for repsonding to my questions.
How do you make a comparison? NASCAR has a HUGE television contract worth hundreds of millions and the tracks hold tens of thousands of people. Some of the high profile sponsors pay in the neighborhood of $20 million per year to sponsor a Sprint Cup team. On the other hand $50k to win is one of the biggest purses on the World of Outlaws tour (most are $25k and $10k).

How much of an increase would it take from NHRA..to these teams..to even brake even? WITHOUT A SPONSOR?

That's why they have sponsors...GEEZ.

My gripe is for winning..or runner-up. What do they get?

Knoxville Nationals winner gets $150 grand. (and they earned it, too by the way)

It isn't fair..that's for sure. But it's nice to see something.

Thats all well and good the purse increase but has anyone rented a motel room or bought a meal on the road ?

The price increases are coming along faster than signs can be changed.
If the sponsors can't justify increases or continuing support no one can race on Glendale's largess.
NASCAR is suffering losses on all fronts from fan support to sponsors to the number of Independents able to supply fodder to fill the races even if not competive.

Pray for our Economy and the well being of those who support our sport.
Dow Chemical a couple years ago paid out 1 billion dollars a year for natural gas to power it's plants in the US alone.
This year it costs 1 billion dollars a quarter for the same fuel.

I believe I read that Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s sponsorship is $22 million per year. I'm really not sure what NHRA teams get from major sponsors. I've heard it's in the $1 million to $2 million range but I'm sure that there are others here who could speak to that more authoritatively. As for ESPN, it's the exact opposite of NASCAR; the NHRA actually pays ESPN2 to broadcast the races.

Top caliber fuel sponsorship will be between 2.6 and 3.2, depending on who you talk to. And that doesn't include hospitality.

That's right in line with what I've heard. Shoestring budget: 1.25 to 1.50 and double that to "do it right".

And that doesn't include hospitality.

I was under the impression that hospitality doesn't even run through the race team, that it's just subbed out and expensed directly to the sponsor. But I could be completely wrong.

1.5 to 3 mil is what has been tossed aorund the last couple of years as the price foe a fuel team. Although the Cnbc story that just ran, said 3-4 million

You may be right on that, Christopher, I don't know for sure. I guess I just assumed that things like that would all be a part of the proposal.
