After much discussion with sponsors Nitroplate, Superlifts.com, and Marck Industries, Top Fuel driver Scott Palmer chosen to sit out the upcoming NHRA National Event at Las Vegas this weekend. Instead, Palmer and his team will be heading to Orlando for the World Street Nationals in his ’63 Corvette Pro Mod.
“Don’t get me wrong, the Top Fuel car is the #1 priority, but the way things are going out there, with the countdown cars and all the big teams getting all the airtime, it’s hard for sponsors to get enough exposure to justify spending the money.” Palmer admits. “Plus, because of the change to 90% Nitro in 2008, we wouldn’t really get any useable data for next year. I really think that with the way the Pro Mod has been running this year, we could be really competitive Orlando , and have a lot of fun at the same time.”
Both Palmer’s Top Fuel Dragster and his Pro Mod have had reasonably short seasons this year, with Palmer attending 6 NHRA National Events in his Dragster, and about 4 Pro Mod races, but the performance of the two cars has been outstanding. Of those 6 NHRA National Events, Palmer qualified at 4, outqualifying some of NHRA’s higher budget teams at those races. The team improved their career best E.T. to a time of 4.57 at the Norwalk National Event, and even had a semi-final round finish at the Tulsa IHRA Event. Pro Mod racing, Palmer won the Super Chevy Event in Indianapolis , as a fill in driver for Barklage Racing. In his ’63 Corvette, Palmer won a Pro Mod Shootout at Woods Brothers Raceway in Sallisaw , Oklahoma , and had a semi-final round finish at the Miss Torco Shootout in Tulsa . At the 1/8th mile event in Tulsa , Palmer laid down a 4.10 run in qualifying, which put him in the 3rd position.
Judging from the performance of Palmer’s Pro Mod this year, the team has the potential to be a serious contender at the World Street Nationals in Orlando . Last year, there were over 70 cars attending the event, with all of the racers showing the skill and determination needed to win.
According to Palmer, “We are really looking forward to this event. 2500 horsepower in a door car always proves to be exciting! That 4.10 pass we made at Tulsa , if we would have run it out to the ¼ mile, probably would have been in the 6.40s or 6.50s. Our setup has proven to be consistent, and I think we should have a really successful Pro Mod weekend.”
Scott Palmer’s Pro Mod will be joining sponsor, Keith Goolsby, of Superlifts.com, and his ’55 Chevy Pro Mod at the Orlando Event. Palmer credits the opportunity to make it to the World Street Finals to Goolsby and Superlifts.com. “Keith’s ’55 has been at a few of the races we’ve attended with Corvette, and he just said how he’d really like to run it at Orlando . I decided I’d like to go too, so we got ready to head down there. We’ve got Nitroplate, Marck Industries, and Wizard’s Warehouse behind us. We just finished freshening up the motor, thanks to Bill Miller, otherwise we wouldn’t have been able to get the parts, and we probably wouldn’t have made it. Our Pro Mod is ready to go, Keith’s Pro Mod is ready to go, and we are all hope to have a good weekend racing. One thing is for sure though; We’ll all have a lot of fun!”
