The device if i remember correctly was a deal to measure how much the rear tires grew during a run.

Gary Beck had a system that measured tire growth back in 84. They had a wheel mounted on a swing arm just behind the rear tires that would measure how much that arm moved during the course of the run. The wheel stayed on the race track, and you could see the arm had X amount of travel at Y distance down the track. I don't think he ran it very long though.

Now they have laser height indicators so you can see growth vs. 3rd member pinion speed/vehicle speed. Pretty neat stuff.. Legal in some classes, not on Pro Stock for some reason, so they'll check their different tires in testing with the lasers. Pro Stock is so touchy anyway, I don't know that traction control would really help those cats unless just making it off the starting line is the problem.
