GM will stop making the GMC Topkick and Chevrolet Kodiak commercial trucks at its Flint, Mich., Assembly Plant by July 31. The plant employs 2,100 people but also makes Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups.
My guess is that the sales numbers didn't add up for the costs of production involved.
The engineering's been paid for, so I figure they'll hold onto the tooling and such until things get better, then perhaps restart production. Sometime down the road, the existing ones will start to wear out and need replacing.
I have a friend who works at the Ford Kentucky Truck Assembly Plant and has basically been laid off since Thanksgiving of last year .... I think he has worked 4 weeks total this year. Ford hasn't announced any intentions to close that plant or discontinue any big truck lines ... but that plant is not running anywhere near capacity. Guess things are tough in the big truck segment all the way around.
