NHRA Leaving ESPN for Fox Sports 1 in 2016

All we have heard around this site for the last umteen years is how bad ESPN is. Now that they are making changes, what do we hear? OH NO! don't do that.

Some around here would complain if they got a new @!(% for Christmas.

To be sure, Fox has had their moments.

Anyone remember the time Fox, during drivers' introductions at the beginning of the show, "blanked out" the logos from the hoods of companies that hadn't bought any commercial time during the broadcast?

Everyone was pretty upset about that one. I think this was back in the early 2,000s.

Yup. They also wouldn't call Charlotte "Lowe's Motor Speedway" because it was free advertising. Bruton Smith was standing by with North Carolina State Troopers to escort their TV trucks off the property if they wouldn't relent.

The most eye-opening thing about this thread to me is that Virgil Hartman watches women's golf!!! Virgil, buddy, we gotta find you something to do with your time LOL.

To be fair, however, these incidents were during the very early years of the first contract with NASCAR, which started in 2001 (the "hood" issue was during their very first telecasts and sorted out before the 2001 Daytona 500). I would imagine many lessons have been learned since then...

I don't see the big deal about "LIVE". I don't see how it will bring new viewers. If anything it will have the opposite effect. The diehard fan is gonna watch no mater what.
We understand the cool down, turn around time. BUT The casual channel surfer that we are trying to hook, when we tunes in to see racing, that's what he wants to see. Not how many miles JF puts on his scooter in a weekend and all the other fill in stuff. If he sees racing on the guide, and tunes in it won't take much fill in fluff to make him grab the remote again.

Thankfully Direct T V has it in my lineup . Looks like a lot of finishes live on Fox Sports . Also looks like the qualifying is on Fox Sports 2 and they promice 450 hours of N HRA . Sounds like a lot ./

Mark Clayton:

That Daily News story brought up many interesting points about a number of different problems and how best to solve them.
One other big problem is how the N.H.R.A. can make the entire show better.

Most people who watch drag racing want to see racing and not petal fests or cars smoking their tires at the hit of the throttle.
Maybe even a return to racing a full quarter mile might help the show and yes I understand all the reasons why this cannot happen but there are many fans who think this move hurt drag racing.

I like all the new idea's coming out of the N.H.R.A. headquarters and they are trying hard to figure out a way to make things better.

Just my opinion.

Maybe I missed it but does anyone know if Fox Sports 1 will be available in Canada, particularly on Telus Optik? I heard it was supposed to replace SPEED but also heard it's only available on Rogers currently. Unfortunately Rogers isn't available in beautiful B.C.

I have a lot of hope the move to Fox Sports will be a prosperous venture. My only concern is for the remainder of this season with ESPN being notified so early would they actually make the airings and shows worse? I mean ESPN already doesn't care about the shows when they are getting paid. And now with half of the season left, as well as championships to be won, how will ESPN treat NHRA and the fans knowing that they're finally rid of something they didn't have an interest in to begin with? Also, is the broadcast team on year to year deals? or are they stuck with time remaining?

I agree. There are just too many things that can go wrong during a live broadcast that will delay a race. I'm sure the crews don't like it as it puts much more pressure on them. Pressure that could lead to a costly, and or, dangerous mistake. I would much rather see a well edited race a few hours later. I always DVR the races anyway (dislike 98% of the commercials) so having the broadcast live makes no difference for me.

To the new NHRA prez, while you're making changes, ban the use of throttle stops (the ultimate pedal fest).

I think the best option would be to include the pro mods and/or bikes on the four shows on Fox. The extra passes will give the crews the needed time while still giving the casual viewer a show. I am sure that they are also working out contingency programming to have ready to go. NHRA needs to study NASCAR, Indy and F1 live broadcasts and utilize all of the information to find a blend that they can apply to our show so that it is the best it can be.

They still have a contract and could be sued to breach or failure if they really did a bad job. More importantly, and while it applies to any business it really does in a high profile/public one, other customers will see and hear how you treat a current customer. Why put a bad smudge on their name just to "get back" at NHRA for leaving. They are still getting paid and it would look bad to other potential sports looking to buy these spots once they are available.

I would love the current crew to migrate over to the FS1 telecasts.

Barring that, Marty Reid would be a good choice. He was certainly better than Paul Page! Yeah flame me now haha....
