Can they go back to before they went public?
I'd wager yes, if the parties of the contract were still the same, or if there was a clause (likely) that said something akin to "XAI, or its assigns/designees" that legally would transfer rights/obligations to the new (here public) company. I'm sure as complex as these contracts were like to that provisions were in for both sides. I could be wrong, but I'd bet $20 there were terms like that.

Attorney Edd Harney, known throughout the sport as The Drag Race Lawyer, said he sees no easy legal avenue because there apparently was no contract between IHRA and its racers. He said legal concepts such as detrimental reliance could be considered, but proving a viable claim and ultimately collecting on it could be extremely difficult.
Harney also said he has seen nothing indicating IHRA intended to defraud its competitors.
“I’ve seen nothing that I have read or seen from IHRA’s perspective that there was any intent to defraud,” Harney said. “Kind of my view of it looks to be somebody that wanted to heavily get involved in the sport, maybe got a bit over their skis, and then when their money source dried up, they didn’t quite have the money to support the promises that they tried to make.”

Very interesting. I had made the comment about intent to defraud before, but was thinking more in like vendors and such. Concerning no contract existing between IHRA and the racers, it would be interesting to see what racers had to do/sign for entry as a participant. It could be as simple as they pay to enter, and are allowed to qualify, and that's that regarding the consideration part.
Contract law can be pretty sticky sometimes. Glad that they posted the commentary from Mr. Harney. Good to know that.
