Didn’t NHRA consider combining the two classes a few years ago? Just guessing they were trying to slow the MMPS down and not speed up the 500 CI racers. I don’t think the majority of the MMPS racers want to go quarter mile. When they were running NHRA I don’t remember more than a dozen showing up.

I’m sure that’s why they have. Within the group of owners they mention sticking together. I’m sure that is pointing to 1/8 mile. If half of them were to find a home at NHRA, the other half wouldn’t have nearly as much to offer. Plus it’s cheaper running to the 1/8 and most MMPS teams are as well funded as the NHRA pro stockers. The only way they are going NHRA racing is if they bring the series sponsor with them. Not sure if NHRA would even consider them as a 1/8 mile class.

Dry hops were cool but I really miss the long smoky burnouts.

1982 World Finals were on Tubi's NHRA channel, and MAN- I almost forgot how much I loved the long burnouts, especially by The GOAT, Mr. Force...

I get it too, Alan- its a business. Consistency can lead to bigger payday, and long burnouts and dry hops throw tune-ups into turmoil. But damn- they were FUN. And they were exclusively OURS.

I also miss throttle wacks too, they really got the attention of first timers including me. When someone who had never been asked me what a throttle wack sounded like I was stumped. After thinking about it for awhile I came up with: Imagine a huge stack of one inch thick steel plates dropped off of a 10 story building.

I always related throttle wacks to when the sound guy opens up the PA on a stadium show and forgets that the Master faders are up at unity the same time a guitar tech unplugs an amplifier

I love watching PS and MMPS. Killer burnouts and the cars are engineering marvels. I even like the sound. They're not the shock value of nitro classes but super cool nonetheless.
