<P>ENNIS, Texas – Current IHRA Top Fuel points leader Spencer Massey will make his NHRA Top Fuel debut behind the wheel of Mitch King’s Bexar Waste sponsored entry during this weekend’s O’Reilly Super Start Batteries Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex just south of Dallas, his home track. The Ft. Worth native will also pilot his trusty A/Fuel Dragster in the Top Alcohol Dragster category this weekend.
Massey, 25, is excited about making his NHRA Top Fuel debut at his home track.
"Mitch King and our Crew Chief Paul Smith have given me a great car all year on the IHRA side,” Massey continued. “Obviously, this weekend, our first priority is to just qualify. We just want to get the car from A to B and make consistent laps. It would be great to make the field; there are so many great teams over here. Maybe we can be a spoiler in the Countdown to the Championship over here.”
Even with the fanfare of his Top Fuel debut, Massey still has something to prove in Gene Snow’s A/Fuel Dragster.
“I have a lot of friends in the alcohol ranks and the sportsman racers in Division 4,” commented Massey. “I feel like I’m kind of representing them all. I hope to do well by them in both classes. We found a few little things wrong with the car in Indy and went to the semifinals. Hopefully that will help us get the car back turned around and running the numbers it should. We had some bad luck and DNQ’ed here last year; hopefully we can bounce back and win it this weekend.”
While the action on the track will be first and foremost on the minds of both teams, it will be hard for the Top Fuel team to keep their thoughts from home. King and many of the crewmembers are Galveston, Texas, residents and have suffered extensive damage to their homes and businesses as a result of Hurricane Ike. Massey hopes a strong showing will help alleviate some of the pain at home.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with all the people that have been affected by Hurricane Ike,” cited Massey. “Mitch lives down there and his business, La King’s Confectionary is on The Strand in Galveston. Several of our volunteer crewmembers are from Galveston, and they have homes and businesses down there, too. We all need to see what we can do to help all of the Ike victims get back on their feet.”
Qualifying begins on Friday with two sessions, followed by two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
