BAYTOWN, Texas - Second-year NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster pilot Brandon 'The Kid' Lewis scored his second straight semifinal round finish on the national event trail during this past weekend's O'Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park. Despite not taking home the win, Lewis' Morrison Construction/TigerFlow Systems backed entry was one of the most consistent cars on the grounds, running no slower that 5.45 all weekend.
Lewis, 22, who is a surgical tech in Broken Arrow, Okla., when not racing, qualified the family's A/Fuel Dragster tuned by his father Dave and Tony Volturo fourth in the field with a 5.352 second elapsed time at 262.44 mph. In round one, Lewis took a close win over fellow Oklahoman Aaron Tatum with a 5.391 at 266.32 mph, then took out former Division 4 Champ Spencer Massey in round two with a 5.372 at 260.86 mph.
In his semifinal round matchup with eventual runner up Duane Shields, Lewis stepped up to a 5.361 at 263.10 mph which was narrowly outdone by Shields' 5.351 at 272.45 mph.
"We're definitely pleased with the consistency we had this weekend," said Lewis. "We made six laps and our worst run was a 5.45. We really can't complain much. We just needed to step it up a little more for the semifinal against Duane."
"We're learning how to make it respond to changes," Lewis continued. "We've also been fortunate to run in similar conditions the past few events, which definitely helps. We're making runs down the track and collecting data, so hopefully that will help us when the weather starts getting hot. Now we just need to figure out how to run like we've been running at the nationals at divisional tracks. We can really throw the power at it at the nationals, but you have to finesse it a little more at the divisionals."
The weekend was a big weekend not only on the track, but off the track as well as the team entertained guests from sponsor TigerFlow Systems who had several executives at the track, including company President Monroe Guest.
"We enjoyed having the Monroe and the TigerFlow people as our guests this weekend," stated Lewis. "We had a good weekend and showed them what we're about. We look forward to carrying the TigerFlow colors into battle this year and can't wait to hit the track in Dallas in a few weeks."
The next event for the Morrison Construction/TigerFlow team will be the Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at the Texas Motorplex, just south of Dallas, Apr. 11-13.
