I think it was the year before, at the US nationals, Darrel won a round, and grenaded the motor in the process. When asked by Steve at the far end if he know the motor was wounded, he said yes he did know. When Steve asked "You mean you stayed in it even though you knew the motor was hurt??" Darrel expressed, in an astonished tone, "Are you KIDDING ME MAN?!?
This is the NATS!, I ain't lifting!"

Classic Darrel

It will be nice to see that scheme on a car again.

I remember that Easter weekend of his accident like it was yesterday. I was incredulous. I believed in my heart he was on his way to a championship that season. Ironic that he was involved with the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis way before he was struck down himself. As far as research I saw the other night on TV there is experimentation with injecting stem cells harvested from the olfactory area of the brain directly into the spinal injury.

Yep, Darrel was always one of my favorite all time racers too. This will be a great tribute! It will be great to see Doug win too and pad that points lead!:D

My wife and I saw him win his last race at Gainesville. I was really happy, but my wife was an Eddie Hill fan and she was upset her hero got beat.

Darrell was going to win the championship that year. that's where his team was all going.

His accident was the first serious injury in nitro in some time, when it happened. Does it seem like there's been an increase in serious accidents and fatal injuries in nitro in the last ten or fifteen years?

I couldn't tell from the article....
Is Coors going to pony-up some money? (i.e. for Darrel's charity?)

Good question, Jim. You would think it's a high possibility. Come to think of it, I wouldn't be surprised to maybe see the car at Denver later this season?? Does Molson-Coors still produce the Extra Gold product? I do know the Kalitta team has good relations with Coors (i.e., the one-off Jesse James Coors Bandit car that Scott ran at Bandimere). Jesse & Sandra were supposed to be at the track with Team Kalitta that weekend but instead they went off & got secretly married.... I'm still mad about that! :o

I had the honor to help restore a Gwynn car for the Garlits Museum while I was working for Dave Uyehara. This is a cool thing the Kalitta team is doing...Great display of class and sportsmanship!!
Looking forward to seeing it!

They do still produce Extra Gold, they just don't sell it east of the Mississippi. I wish they did, that was my favorite beer!
