These threads always crack me up. You get an email when you get a new PM, and when you login to the site the first thing it does is tell you if you have a new PM. Everyone knows they have new PM before they would ever see the redundant/superfluous thread.

Not true. You have to opt in to receive those messages in your email AND to be notified when you login. Those features can be turned off and on.
