Isn't it great how well Jim Head does with no sponsorship! Just goes to show ya, money can't buy everything! Smarts goes a long way too!

Jim Head is one of my fav's too. He's super smart, a fellow civil engineer. Gotta think that if I were a racer, I would be doing all I could to use logic and engineering to get down the track faster - as I am sure he does now. Loved his comment in an interview once when asked if when its time to retire if he'd put someone else in the seat, he said it's too dangerous and would never put anyone but himself in his car.

He said he would never put anyone else in the car??? I must be hearing things as all I have ever heard him say is he wants to get out of the seat and just tune. He always seems to be looking for someone who can bring plenty of money.

First time I ever saw Jim Head race, he won the Cajun Nationals in I think about 1981. I also remeber the "Give me Head till I'm dead" t-shirts. Nice to know the little guy (I know, I know, he owns a big company but he dont have to spend his money racing) can still finish strong.:)

Jim probably has a couple bucks to work with, so "money did buy..." ;) Hope he does good this year.

Umm, yeah..
I would think..
It's amazing to think how people seperate unsponsored cars and their budgets as "a few bucks". You don't always need a sponsor to fill your bank account with money. Sometimes, there are actually very smart businessmen who aquire lots of wealth with their noggon and good old fashioned hard work.
I think Jim has plenty to bucks to work with, and I have a lot of respect for him.

A year or so ago there was a thread on here about independent Fuel teams and how they get by. Bobby Lagana jr. posted about how they gang up 4-5 crew guys to a Motel room. A lot of the really squeezed teams will stay at the track, no motels what so ever. As for Jim Head, even though he is a very wealthy man, I'm still willing to bet he'll trim the Fat anyway he can!

I always love seeing Jim Head do well at the races. I'm not sure if most people know just how brilliant he is. I hope he can win one more before he hangs it up.

This was after Scott's passing, and he said that at the time, he was having second thoughts about the idea of being responsible for someone else's safety. I think he still wants to hand the job over. He's an eng-gin-eer through and through, and I have the utmost respect for him.

can remember reading somewhere that jim prefers the professional nitro
classes in nhra (as opposed to nascar, irl, etc.) because with a few dollars
and a few smarts, a privateer can still play with, and sometimes win over
the multi-car, sponsored teams.

i also have a lot of respect for him.

A funny car combined with our screwball economy could make him a not so wealthy man in a hurry!!!!!

I remember the comment he made after Scott Kalitta's crash-he was asked if Scott's death would increase his desire to find a driver for his car and he indicated it was just the opposite-he didn't want to have the responsibility for someone else. However, lately I have seen interviews on TV and/or articles that indicate he really would like to find a driver but that driver must bring funding which is the hangup I think. There are good drivers out there like TJ, Melanie, Burkart but they don't bring funding.

Can someone in the know, tell me why a sponser does,nt snap Jim head & his bunch up? We all know he is one of the most intelligent guy,s out there. I,m just wondering if it,s because he won,t bend over backwards to please said sponser. Maybe thing,s will change if and when he put,s another driver in the seat.

Sponsors are rarely fans, if ever.
It's business and it's all about ROI, period.

You don't find many people who will just come along and say "I like you", and give you a few million dollars of his hard earned money, unless you can prove that you can put an extra few million more in sales back into his business account.

Jim Head's crew is one of the hardest working out there. Back when I was still camping in the zoo, we were near the area where they had the fuel teams parked along the final approach to the final turn before the straitaway. (Before the bridge from the entrance.)

Jim's crew was always the first to begin working in the morning, and one of the last ones to pack up for the night.
