You're ALL wrong! The black stripe actually represents an affiliation with the Mafia...of which Jeggie is a member. His real last name was changed from 'Domenico' to 'Coughlin' to hide his long affiliation with the Columbus mob.

I can't believe you didn't know that...

Ok, John, since you let the cat out of the bag on Jeggie's cosa nostra affiliations just because he is a Chevy racer, I feel behooved to let everyone know that your last name Caran was abbreviated by your grandfather from Caranelli, a family name that has long been associated with the feared Ozark Hickory Chip mafia located in a state that I will not name but can only say it has a school that is in the big 12, starts with the letter M, and the people are constantly asking to be shown....Sorry, John, but I think it's best that everyone knows the whole sordid story, not to mention the Hickory Chip Mafia's association a few years back with a certain Wayne County Speed Shop.....the plot thickens...:D

Isn't 28 Capps' permanent NHRA competition number?

It's common in the sportsman ranks to have more than one competition number on your car and cross out the one that isn't being used for a particular event.

I believe that was the number the late Davey Allison (NASCAR) used. I've always wondered if that was some sort of tribute to him.

28 is Ron Capps permanent race number. From memory it was selected when he went to drive for the Snake as he was in a Z-28 Camaro.

Kel will be able to clarify.

The first time I saw it done was after the death of Lee Shepherd. All of the pro stock contingent put the black slashes through their numbers in respect and recognition for Lee. It may have been done before that, but that was the first time I had seen it done. Since then it has kinda been adopted as the drag racing world's way of acknowledging and showing respect for a fallen comrade.

I was just a kids but I remember that. Didn't they do a missing man formation during the pre race parade for him too?

I was under the impression permanant numbers were assigned by division and as such would give Capps a 7 as a lead in to a permanant number.
Then again, I'm old and just joined because I've been lurking a long time and wanted to contribute if I really can. Otherwise, I'll be quiet and just keep lurking.

You can have permanent numbers that aren't four digits. Numbers 10 and under are reserved for last years 1-10 finishers, numbers 11 - 999 are permanently assigned numbers, and four digit numbers are assigned by division (1000-1999 for div 1, etc.). It's common for people in division 6 (for example) with permanent numbers to have 600-699, but as I understand it, that's just a custom, not a requirement.

Who's Jimmy Stewart?? ;):p
Isn't he that guy that stands on the starting line with a button in his hand??? You know, the one that always points at his watch, the one that sometimes sits on the bar stool, the one that wiggles his fingers real funny to make it rain???

Charlie,

I think in some cases that is correct. Maybe now that the Pro cars don't run at Divisional races that has changed. That said, Tasca and Neff have some high numbers.

Larry Dixon always wears #91 unless he is #1.

This is a thread derail (sorry), but are his antics embarrassing or what? When Buster was on the line he was the MAN in charge. This hillbilly looks like Jed Clampitt's younger twin on SPEED! :o If I were a Pro Stock driver, with a $200,000 race car under me, there would be nothing Rick could do that would alter my staging plans. What a screwball...

You blew my cover Larsen....you ^*#$%^^*&^(&^!@#)(^%%!!!

Me and my boyz will meet you and your boyz in Lincoln on October 4th. We'll settle this once and for all...on your turf. Evidently last year's 42-16 thumping wasn't enough for you! You want more...you'll get it!

GO MIZZOU!!! :D

I had heard Ron say that he would run the #28 no matter how he finished in the top 10 until he actually finishes #1

Absolutely correct, PJ. I had forgotten about that, but they did do the missing man formation with I believe Bob Glidden in the lead spot. Well done, Glasshoppah! You have wisdom beyond your years!

Ding! Ding! Ding!

That's exactly right....and the 28 comes from his first F/C being a Z-28. Also, I heard mention his dad used that number to race back in the day....but, that's not confirmed. Papa John? Care to elaborate? :)
